Only one of the remaining three meetings across the UK on Wednesday is over jumps after Newbury failed an inspection 24 hours earlier.

They go at Southwell, where they have passed an inspection, before an all-weather card from Newcastle and an evening all-weather card from Kempton.

We have concentrated on the all-weather action and among our Wednesday fancies is a well-bred filly trained by Ralph Beckett in the 6f maiden at Kempton.

Wednesday Racing Tips

  • 18:30 Kempton - Queen Jean @ 9/1
  • 20:00 Kempton - Clipsham Gold @ 3/1

14:20 Newcastle - Liege @ 5/2

Liege is considered one of the best bets on the all-weather on Wednesday when contesting the Class 5 6f maiden at Newcastle.

He ran too freely but still managed to reach an encouraging three-length fifth of 11 on his debut over 7f at Wolverhampton in December and was awarded a Racing Post Rating of 68 for that performance.

Liege's breeding points to the likelihood of him thriving over this slightly shorter trip on this stiffer, straight course. He is a half-brother to a winner over this 6f trip on the all-weather, and the son of Kingman is out of an unraced but well-bred dam.

He can exploit that potential by improving past the likes of Mattella and Alfa Kellenic, who are slightly more exposed.

18:30 Kempton - Queen Jean @ 9/1

Queen Jean is representing Beckett in the Class 5 6f maiden from Kempton on Wednesday evening.

Beckett has a healthy 18% strike-rate with his runners at the Sunbury venue, and Rob Hornby, who is a profitable 38-199 (19%) when riding for Beckett, continues in the saddle.

The only other three-year-old filly in the field is Gaiden, who sets the form standard after finishing third off 82 over this course and distance recently on her eighth attempt to get off the mark.

A reproduction of that level of form may prove good enough wearing first-time cheekpieces, but she does remain vulnerable to any potential improvers.

The selection Queen Jean is the suggested potential improver at more rewarding odds.

She has shown promise for this drop back to 6f in her two starts over 7f here and at Wolverhampton in November and December. A much bigger effort is anticipated from this well-bred daughter of Kingman on this occasion.

20:00 Kempton - Clipsham Gold @ 3/1

Clipsham Gold has strong form claims in the Class 5 1m Fillies' Handicap on Kempton's all-weather card.

The five-year-old is one of only six runners set to go to post and only two of those six have won over this course and distance.

She arrives in fair form and seems likely to run her race. The mare is 2-15 on the all-weather and she registered a personal best Racing Post Rating of 75 when winning comfortably at the Sunbury venue in May of last year from this evening's mark of 66.

The daughter of Galileo Gold will prove a tough nut to crack if she reproduces that level of form on this occasion.
