Pontefract scaled

There's something for everyone on Tuesday with a Jumps card at Carlisle, Flat racing on the turf at Pontefract and Navan plus all-weather fare from Southwell.

I've focused on the action at Pontefract for Tuesday's horse racing tips, with a Clive Cox-trained sprinter of particular interest there.

Horse Racing Tips - Tuesday, April 8

  • 15:02 Pontefract - Diamond De Vindecy @ 8/1
  • 16:07 Pontefract - Middleton View @ 4/1
  • 16:42 Pontefract - Herakles @ 5/1

15:02 Pontefract - Diamond De Vindecy @ 8/1

The Jamaican Flight Handicap over 2m2f at Pontefract will take some getting and the eye is drawn to strong stayer DIAMOND DE VINDECY for trainer Robert Bevis.

The booking of top jockey Jason Hart to ride Diamond De Vindecy catches the eye. The last time Hart was in the saddle, Diamond De Vindecy was beaten by half a length at odds of 20-1 at Ripon on soft ground by Justus, who won this last season.

Diamond De Vindecy will be 6lb better off with Justus on that running and will get his favoured conditions at Pontefract.

Justus loves the mud, whereas my selection is a five-time winner on good ground (including in a staying race at Haydock last summer). He should have every chance.

16:07 Pontefract - Middleton View @ 4/1

Clive Cox unleashed a bright prospect in James's Gate in the three-year-old 6f handicap on this Pontefract card last season and MIDDLETON VIEW is taken to emulate his stablemate.

James's Gate established himself as a stakes performer at the end of his three-year-old campaign, and while Middleton View has a long way to go to scale those heights, he makes his handicap debut off a workable mark.

The son of Bated Breath didn't show much in two runs last summer but kept on in eye-catching fashion to grab second behind an odds-on favourite on his third run at Kempton in February. The winner followed up next time and Middleton View could have done with a strong pace to chase.

He needs to translate his all-weather form to the turf, but he shouldn't have any issue with that.

16:42 Pontefract - Herakles @ 5/1

Paul Midgley is a dab hand with sprinters and is expected to conjure another victory out of HERAKLES, who is back on a winnable mark for the 5f handicap at Pontefract.

Herakles caught the eye on his first run since November at Newcastle last month. He travelled smoothly into the contest but found his path blocked repeatedly in the straight, finishing with plenty under the bonnet.

That was a Class 4 race and Herakles drops into a Class 6 here, so simply must be competitive if arriving in the same sort of form.

He was entitled to be a little ring-rusty at Newcastle anyway. While stall eight is wider than ideal for this prominent racer, he may be too classy at this level. A big run is expected.

16:42 Pontefract - Winner Herakles
