Wolverhampton races scaled

The cold snap has set in across Britain and Ireland over the last few days and that means we focus on the all-weather card at Wolverhampton for Tuesday’s horse racing tips.

Among my selections is one for dual-purpose trainer James Owen who struck top form in December and she might win again before the assessor grabs a firm hold of her.

Horse Racing Tips - Tuesday, January 7

  • 17:00 Wolverhampton - Forever Proud @ 11/4
  • 18:00 Wolverhampton - Autumn Angel @ 7/2
  • 18:30 Wolverhampton - Back Tomorrow @ 5/1

17:00 Wolverhampton - Forever Proud @ 11/4

The 1m½f handicap is a very competitive affair with a field of 12 set to go to post, but the bang in form FOREVER PROUD could prove difficult to beat given her progressive profile.

Trained by masterful dual-purpose handler James Owen, the five-year-old daughter of Sioux Nation left Mark Hoad in the summer and it took her six starts to get off the mark for her new yard when scoring over 1m at Chelmsford off a mark of 46 last month.

She was then runner-up to the reopposing Boujee Gold over this course and distance two days later and, although that rival is now 3lb better off at the weights, that's because Forever Proud won again off a mark of 50 over track and trip when last seen.

Always up near the pace throughout, she ran on well in the closing stages in the manner of a horse still ahead of her mark. This is tougher from a 4lb higher mark, but she has the scope to win again.

18:00 Wolverhampton - Autumn Angel @ 7/2

Trainer Tony Carroll had the best year of his career in 2024 when sending out 106 winners on the Flat, a mark-up of 28 from the year before, while he has got 2025 off to a flyer too.

With that in mind, AUTUMN ANGEL should take all the beating in division one of the 6f classified stakes race. The four-time winner comfortably won over course and distance on her penultimate outing a week ago and she had excuses for not following up last Friday.

Sent off as a warm favourite at Southwell, she was slowly into stride and had it all to do from the off, but she powered home in the closing stages to finish a never-nearer third. She can make amends here.

18:30 Wolverhampton - Back Tomorrow @ 5/1

Division two follows and Ewan Whillans' BACK TOMORROW rates as a bet. The five-year-old mare is another who finished her race off very strongly when fourth of 11 in a course and distance handicap latest, beaten less than a length for a finish.

She won't have to improve much on that to win a race of this nature and, although she is winless in 10 starts for this yard now, she won't find a better opportunity to get off the mark.

Whillans doesn't have a prolific strike-rate on the Flat at all, but his charge here should be available at a backable price.
