Newton Abbot Racecourse

There are five scheduled meetings across the UK and Ireland on Wednesday, with four meetings on the Flat supporting the mumps card at Newton Abbot. They race at Newton Abbot and Nottingham in the afternoon, while evening meetings come from the Curragh, Kempton (AW) and Ripon.

We have three Wednesday fancies to follow including an improving handicap hurdler in the concluding contest from Newton Abbot.

Wednesday's Racing Tips: June 5

  • 5.15 Newton Abbot - City Roller @ 11/4
  • 3.40 Newton Abbot - Midnight Centurion @ 17/2
  • 4.40 Newton Abbot - Electric Eddy @ 9/2

5.15 Newton Abbot - City Roller @ 11/4

CITY ROLLER makes significant appeal in the ten-runner second division of the Class 5 extended 2m Handicap Hurdle at Newton Abbot on Wednesday.

The selection features off a mark of 90 after nine starts over hurdles and ran to a peak Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 98 and 100 over 2m and an extended 2m4f at Huntingdon and Newcastle on good to soft ground in January and February 2023.

The six-year-old Scorpion gelding is representing Laura Horsfall, who is 2-6 in the past fortnight, and Kevin Brogan is back in the saddle, a rider with a 2-17 (12%) record over hurdles on this course.

City Roller shaped encouragingly from the front over an extended 2m2f on decent ground at Stratford last month, keeping on once headed after the last, and he may prove more difficult to catch on this occasion over this shorter trip on another sharp course.

MIDNIGHT CENTURION looks sure to go well back on a better surface on his second start since a lengthy absence, but from a competitive mark on his third run over fences in the Class 4 2m5f Novices' Handicap Chase at Newton Abbot.

He won a Class 4 Ludlow maiden hurdle over this 2m5f trip on decent ground in March 2022 and performed with credit over a slightly shorter distance on his chasing debut on soft ground at Catterick that November.

That Catterick effort was from a 7lb higher rating than today and the return to good ground over a longer trip is going to suit on his first start since running third after a 413-day absence back at Ludlow in January.

The final suggestion is ELECTRIC EDDY in the 11-runner first division of the Class 5 extended 2m Handicap Hurdle from Newton Abbot.

Twiston-Davies is a healthy 32-150 (21% +£1.95) with his runners over hurdles at Newton Abbot and his recent representatives have performed with credit.

Electric Eddy should appreciate the sharper nature of this course on a decent surface after his more encouraging six-length seventh on good to soft ground at Uttoxeter last month.

His RPR went in the right direction but he features off a 2lb lower mark with the capable 3lb-claiming jockey Finn Lambert taking over in the saddle. Lambert is 24-141 (17%) when riding for Twiston-Davies.

The unexposed six-year-old Mount Nelson gelding has decent each-way claims on his sixth career start.
