Punchestown racecourse

It is the first day of Punchestown's season-ending Festival on Tuesday (14:30-18:35), with multiple Group 1s featuring on the card. In the afternoon, British Flat meetings at Nottingham and Brighton will provide the support, while by the end of the feature card the seven-race all-weather fixture at Wolverhampton will be underway.

Two of our Tuesday fancies come from the Grade 1s at Punchestown, but there is also a filly to follow in Nottingham's big race.

Today's Horse Races

16:28 Nottingham - Ambiente Amigo @ 3/1

The Nottinghamshire Oaks is a valuable race and a chance for some middle-distance fillies to bag some black type early in the season. That considered, the field looks pretty thin and it looks like a good opportunity for the slowly progressive AMBIENTE AMIGO to score.

This four-year-old is by Postponed, and her damsire is Azamour. That is a recipe for gradual improvement into her four-year-old season, if not even further, and she has followed that path so far.

After a productive summer last year, Ambiente Amigo dabbled in juvenile hurdles, winning at Newcastle and getting some black type. She then had a break and returned to the Flat with a career-best run at Kempton 31 days ago, confounding market weakness to chase home a progressive type who has since finished third in Listed company.

That run gives Ambiente Amigo a fitness edge on Francophone, who has slightly better form last year but has not run since October. She can get in there before her rivals hit their stride.

16:50 Punchestown - Gorgeous Tom @ 14/1

Plenty of the right sorts have turned up for this Grade 1 novice chase at Punchestown, which is something of a rerun of the Brown Advisory at the Cheltenham Festival.

While the market has largely adjusted to the events from Cheltenham, it may have overlooked that GORGEOUS TOM enhanced his reputation that day, while proving his stamina and ensuring his fitness. He was also, given his clear suitability to good ground, going to get better as the spring goes on.

The Brown Advisory was a messy race, in which Lecky Watson had the run of the race and took advantage. Gorgeous Tom was done for pace when the tempo increased, but stayed on well to regain fourth late in the day.

This race is unlikely to be so steadily run. That may help Ballyburn, but his problems over fences run deeper than a tendency to overrace. Impaire Et Passe and Slade Steel both have stamina to prove, although the latter probably will get this far in time.

Gorgeous Tom simply has none of those concerns. His ability is the question, and each-way could be the best way to play him in order to insure against that. But if he is ever going to post a big figure, it is under these conditions.

18:00 Punchestown - Fact To File @ 4/5

The Champion Chase has an interesting clash, in that we know FACT TO FILE relishes the track while Marine Nationale is the reigning champion over two miles.

It is noted that Marine Nationale has looked much better on his two visits to Cheltenham than anywhere else. While he is likely to be a big player when asked to defend his crown at the festival next year, he faces an uphill task to hold off a thriving Fact To File at a track where he has already landed an open Grade 1.

That was in the Ryanair Chase, where Fact To File put up the performance of the season in demolishing the field. It was not the strongest race, but the time was good, to the point that you cannot imagine Fact To File having much trouble back at 2m.
