Just three meetings are left on the UK schedule on Tuesday after Yarmouth failed to pass a morning inspection on their rain-soaked turf.
The action now comes from Exeter and Hereford over jumps, before Wolverhampton’s evening of all-weather action.
We have three fancies, including Joe Tizzard’s Copperhead in his attempt to snap a long losing sequence after two positive showings of late.
Tuesday Racing Tips
15:00 Exeter – Copperhead @ 6/1
It’s been a long wait between drinks for Copperhead, whose most recent success came at Ascot in the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Chase in February 2020.
A tired fall the following month at the Cheltenham Festival appeared to rock his confidence and he’s now gone 14 runs over fences/hurdles without a win.
Recent signs have been more promising however as the nine-year-old attempts to take advantage of a much-reduced rating.
He was second at Ludlow in May – a race from which all of the contenders ran well on their next starts – and filled the same berth in this month’s comeback at Fontwell over a 2m5½f trip that would be shorter than optimal.
Copperhead didn’t do himself any favours jumping to the right in the home straight but he rallied strongly to close down front-running mare Sacre Coeur close home – with the winner franking that form by going in again at Plumpton on Monday.
This longer trip should be ideal for Brendan Powell’s partner and they should have a massive say in this Betfred Extra Place Race (four places).
15:40 Hereford – Montregard @ 13/8
Trainer Tom Lacey looks to have a decent prospect on his hands in the shape of Montregard, a half-brother to top-class Grade 1-winning chaser Protektorat.
This JP McManus-owned four-year-old was placed third on his racecourse bow in a Doncaster maiden hurdle on 2m½f in February and showed the benefit of that when scoring at Warwick (2m3f, good) in April on his second outing.
He was still quite green in that contest, running in snatches at times and having to work to fend off Democritus – though he always appeared to hold the upper hand in their duel.
The extra distance offered now should be right up his street and an opening handicap mark of 105 looks very attainable for this Joshua Tree gelding. He’s on the Most Napped table via the Betfred Betfinder and looks a likely sort to justify inclusion.
19:00 Wolverhampton – Intervention @ 2/1
Michael Appleby’s Intervention has gone 14 months without a win – though he has more often than not run with credit during that time – and as a consequence is now rated some 5lb below his last winning mark.
At Kempton six days ago, the market spoke strongly in his favour, but the Swiss Spirit gelding was only able to finish second.
He did so having raced too keenly early on and then been unable to hold off the strong-travelling and lightly-raced Holkham Bay in the closing stages.
The pair came clear by five-lengths from the remainder in that apprentice handicap, suggesting Intervention is indeed well handicapped now.
Theodore Ladd is back in the plate this evening and, with plenty of pace angles in this race, his mount should be suited by the run of the race. This three-time Wolverhampton winner (two over C&D) can ensure his supporters are rewarded this time.
