Lingfield park racecourse

There are only four scheduled meetings across the UK and Ireland on Tuesday and whilst the racing isn't of the highest grade, it should make up for it in competitiveness.Three Flat cards dominate the day but Ireland's sole fixture takes place over the Jumps.

Lingfield is the first to kick off and it's swiftly followed by Musselburgh, before Ballinrobe and Wolverhampton take us through the evening. Amongst our three strongest fancies of the day is one for trainer Richard Hughes who looks set to find significant improvement upon switching to handicaps.

Horse Racing Tips - Tuesday, July 23

  • 2.00 Lingfield - Felicity @ 5/6
  • 2.45 Musselburgh - Inertia @ 13/2
  • 3.00 Lingfield - Ellomate @ 17/2

2.00 Lingfield - Felicity @ 5/6

Lingfield's opening race is an interesting fillies handicap and William Haggas runs thrice-raced FELICITY. Owned by rising power Wathnan Racing, she really wasn't beaten far when third on her last couple of starts.

She kept on nicely in a Brighton maiden over this trip last time out and was only a length behind. Haggas' juvenile perhaps could have gotten off the mark at Bath on her penultimate start but she narrowly failed to overcome a slow start.

Wathnan's retained rider James Doyle is on board here and it'll be disappointing if Felicity isn't bang in the mix. Her €350,000 price tag and pedigree both suggest that winning at this level isn't beyond her and this is a good opportunity for the filly to prove it.

2.45 Musselburgh - Inertia @ 13/2

Michael Dods' INERTIA is a horse we have yet to see the best of and is making his handicap debut on Tuesday. The son of Bungle Inthejungle needs to learn to settle better but it'll help his cause if the race is run at a decent gallop here.

He finished sixth over 5f on debut at Doncaster and the form of that race is working out pretty well, with several subsequent winners coming out of it. This colt is related to plenty of winners over the minimum trip and should be capable of getting his head in front at some point.

An opening handicap mark of 56 definitely looks workable and it would be no surprise to see a significantly improved performance here. It's way too early to give up on him and the best is almost definitely yet to come.

3.00 Lingfield - Ellomate @ 17/2

Richard Hughes' ELLOMATE looks like one to follow on handicap debut at Lingfield. The gelded son of Mehmas has had three starts to date and his best display came on an artificial surface at Wolverhampton on debut.

He hung left on the run-in that day, showing clear signs of inexperience in the process. It's also worth noting that he was denied a clear run inside the final furlong and may well have finished better than third if not for that.

Lady Lightning was the winner that day and she is in opposition once again but Richard Hughes' runner can reverse the form, with a 12lb weight swing in his favour this time.

The heavy ground was his undoing when finishing last of seven runners in a better race at Goodwood next time and you can probably put a line through that effort.

Allotted an opening mark of 64 by the handicapper, he can build on that and the switch to handicaps is likely to facilitate plenty of improvement.
