Catterick races

There are three meetings across the UK on Tuesday, with jumps action from Catterick and Wincanton, preceding the evening all-weather card at Newcastle.

We have picked a selection from each of the three venues for our horse racing tips, including Apples Moon, as she looks to continue her upward trajectory at Catterick.

Horse Racing Tips - Tuesday, December 17

  • 13:15 Wincanton - Skin Full @ 9/4
  • 14:30 Catterick - Apples Moon @ 9/4
  • 16:30 Newcastle – Jujubella @ 5/1

13:15 Wincanton - Skin Full @ 9/4

The David Pipe-trained SKIN FULL could improve sufficiently on his second chasing start to win the TrustATrader Approved And Reviewed Trades People Novices' Handicap Chase.

The Doyen gelding cost £82,000 in May 2023 after finishing second in an Irish point-to-point race. His form over hurdles was nothing to write home about, as the market suggested in his three runs in that sphere.

He made more of an impact at Taunton last month on his first foray over fences. David Noonan had him in mid-division throughout and, despite a mistake at the second last, they stayed on encouragingly to be beaten just a length-and-a-half at the line.

This drop in trip may not be optimal in time but he is operating from a low base and could strike.

14:30 Catterick - Apples Moon @ 9/4

A field of 15 were declared for the racingtv.com Mares' Handicap Hurdle but it is perhaps not as competitive as the numbers suggest and APPLES MOON may be well positioned to make it 3-4 since moving into handicap territory.

She won over 2m3f at Warwick (good to soft) in September and was second-best next time at Hereford over a similar trip, denied only by a rival that scored decisively again since at Plumpton.

Apples Moon meanwhile comes into this contest having won at Sedgefield (2m5f, good) in early November.

She made a minor mistake after taking up the running at the second last but she ultimately put the race away in good style and with something up her sleeve. A 5lb rise in the rating is manageable on that evidence.

This is an Extra Place race, meaning that Betfred are paying 4 Places instead of 3 (1/5 Odds).

16:30 Newcastle – Jujubella @ 5/1

The consistent Volenti is sure to prove popular here, boasting recent form figures of 32121, including a two wins over course and distance. He is raised another 5lb for his win here eight days ago and might be vulnerable.

Lucinda Russell's JUJUBELLA looks a solid alternative in first-time cheekpieces. The Too Darn Hot filly was 0-4 on turf in Ireland but has shaped with some purpose in a pair of starts over C&D for this handler.

She was third behind Volenti in that contest here last time, perhaps not suited by the slow pace set by Rebecca's Girl in front.

She has that 5lb turnaround now and a chance that the new headgear will bring some further improvement too.
