Galway racecourse flat

Flat racing holds sway across Britain and Ireland on Tuesday with five meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the evening. First off is Lingfield before they go to Leicester, Catterick, Galway and Newcastle.

Amongst our Tuesday fancies is one for trainer Ado McGuinness at Galway, who went very close at the track in August when he got in as a reserve, and will make it a proper test from the front.

Today's Horse Races

14:50 Catterick - Birkenhead @ 4/1

Sprint king Paul Midgley has won two of the last three runnings of this 5f handicap and he has two runners on this occasion in the form of Vadamiah and BIRKENHEAD, who got his head in front for the third time this year over course and distance last month.

His form figures over this track and trip this year reads 3121, and there was a lot to like about the way he finished off his race last time to win by half a length, always in control despite not winning by too far.

Moving up in class slightly, this is clearly going to be a bit tougher, but the handicapper has only put him up 2lb which is fair and he has a decent draw in stall five. He will need to be right at his best but Birkenhead has strong claims again.

15:10 Leicester - Formal @ 8/13

When Ryan Moore rides one of Sir Michael Stoute's, it's typically a sign that he's on a smart horse and there's every chance FORMAL can build on her impressive debut victory over 7f at Newbury in July.

The well-bred Dubawi filly has an eyecatching pedigree. Her dam Veracious won the Falmouth and she's a half-sister to the top-class Mutakayyef who won over further so for all 7f is fine now, she should improve as she steps up in distance.

On debut, she left odds-on Glistening trailing in her wake and she has a Group 2 Rockfel Stakes entry for later in the month at Newmarket. Formal should be well up to defying a penalty here before moving onto bigger things.

16:35 Galway - Eddie G @ 9/2

In the 1m½f handicap for horses rated 47-75, Ado McGuinness' runner EDDIE G is of serious interest with valuable 3lb claimer Adam Caffrey taking the ride.

He landed a good punt for connections at Dundalk over 6f in January, and was a huge eyecatcher when second here at the Galway Festival on his return in August after getting into the 7f handicap as a reserve.

Sent off a 33/1 chance, he tried to take advantage of his low draw and didn't hang about on the front end. Imposing Supreme was too strong for him in the end but he stuck to his task well in second.

Eddie G ran the next day at Galway but he was disappointing. The run the day before probably knocked the stuffing out of him but he comes here off the back of a good run at Leopardstown and if he sees out this trip he's a big player.
