There are five Thursday meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland on a busy day, with all tastes catered for.

Flat racing is from Bellewstown, Newmarket and Pontefract alongside an evening all-weather meeting from Southwell, while jumps action comes from Clonmel after Perth abandoned their card following a raceday inspection.

We have three fancies across Thursday’s cards including a promising sort for John & Thady Gosden in the Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket.

Thursday Racing Tips

  • 15:35 Newmarket – Eben Shaddad @ 7/2
  • 17:53 Newmarket – Pjanoo @ 7/4
  • 18:00 Southwell – Marie Laveau @ 7/4

15:35 Newmarket – Eben Shaddad @ 7/2

Group 3 action from Newmarket this afternoon as their Cambridgeshire Meeting gets underway, the first of three exciting days at Headquarters.

The Somerville Tattersalls Stakes over 7f is the feature race and it boasts exciting and unexposed contenders like Military for Aiden O’Brien and Alyanabai for Owen Burrows but might be best left to Eben Shaddad for John & Thady Gosden instead.

The Calyx colt cost € 190,000 and certainly knew his job when streaking clear to win a novice over 6f on the July Course here last month. He did that well and while the form is nothing to write home about, it was a very encouraging debut.

He’s probably going to take a step forward now and, with a Group 1 Dewhurst entry, his clever connections obviously think something of him.

Benoit De La Sayette rides and this promising colt can enhance his reputation with a Group 3 success on second start.

17:53 Newmarket – Pjanoo @ 7/4

The closer on day one at HQ is the Newmarket Challenge Whip Handicap over a mile-and-a-quarter and it looks an excellent opportunity for Richard Spencer’s colt Pjanoo to get his second win in three recent runs.

The son of Muhaarar got on the board at Windsor (1m, good to firm) last month and has already proved his stamina for this trip with a close second at Haydock in June.

This month, he went to Wolverhampton for a typically competitive Racing League contest and was beaten a half-length in fourth having been carried right off the final bend in a contest that perhaps wasn’t run to suit. He was staying on again at the finish and should and should be well suited back up in trip in this weaker race with champion jockey William Buick getting the leg up. They are on the Most Napped table via the Betfred Betfinder.

18:00 Southwell – Marie Laveau @ 7/4

Marcus Tregoning’s filly Marie Laveau is 0-6 in her career but has shown promising form in races at Newmarket, Wolverhampton and – this month – Chepstow.

In that most recent start she sported a first-time hood (retained now) and settled better in the early stages. She had to repeatedly switch late on to make a challenge and was beaten a length at the line.

The Sir Percy filly is comfortably rated best in this field, should have no trouble over this longer trip and probably won’t get a better chance to put her head in front. The Tregoning yard are in form with two winners from seven starters recently and this looks an ideal chance to notch another.
