Chepstow races scaled

Flat racing holds sway across Britain and Ireland on Thursday with seven meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the summer evening.

First off is Hamilton, before they go to Chepstow, Leicester, Leopardstown, Killarney, Worcester and Epsom. Amongst our Thursday fancies is one for trainer Brett Johnson who is in great heart and who won't find a better opportunity down in class at Chepstow.

Horse Racing Tips - Thursday, July 18

  • 18:30 Epsom - Charlie Mason @ 10/1
  • 19:00 Epsom - Amancio @ 9/4

Today's Horse Races

15:00 Chepstow - Roscioli @ 3/1

Our opening selection of the day comes in the 7f handicap at Chepstow and, although it's a low-grade affair, it's certainly competitive. One who jumps out is top weight ROSCIOLI for trainer Brett Johnson with Ray Dawson aboard.

The six-year-old contested a Group 3 as a juvenile and was once rated 95. He's nowhere near the horse of times gone by, but he has never run off a lower mark than his current one and he has never run in 0-58 company, so this is his easiest assignment to date.

Now 6lb lower than when successful in a match race at Brighton last summer, he caught the eye when coming from way down the field to take up the lead too far out when second at Lingfield over a mile latest. He's a keen horse but has everything in his favour.

18:30 Epsom - Charlie Mason @ 10/1

Trainer Tony Carroll doesn't frequent Epsom too often, but he has a respectable 16 per cent return at the track in the last five years and CHARLIE MASON might be worth siding with in the extended mile handicap.

The son of Mayson went into a few notebooks at Lingfield last time when flying home into third over 7f late on, clearly in need of a step up in distance on that evidence.

Charlie Mason is a dual winner over 6f, but the most recent of those came on bottomless ground and his pedigree would suggest conditions here could be ideal for him, particularly if more rain comes. At likely decent odds, he can run a big race off his mark.

19:00 Epsom - Amancio @ 9/4

Hollie Doyle was aboard Boasty the last time he was successful, so any market moves for that runner would be interesting, but a chance is taken on Jack Channon's AMANCIO, who has the scope to improve in the 1m2f handicap.

Still only a three-year-old, the son of Sixties Icon worked hard to get to the front at Chester last time out and that early effort cost him for the finish, nonetheless he ran on respectably in fifth.

The ground might also have been on the quick side for Amancio, whose sole victory came in testing conditions over 1m at Haydock in April, before backing that up with a runner-up finish at the same venue on soft over this trip next time.

With forecast soft conditions, he can run a big race.
