Doncaster races scaled

The opening day of the St Leger meeting at Doncaster takes center stage. With Ffos Las abandoned, there are two further Flat fixtures also taking place at Epsom and on the all-weather at Newcastle in the evening.

Among our horse racing tips for Thursday s is one for trainer James Owen and jockey Sean D Bowen, who have a 26 per cent strike-rate together this season (+23.88 to a £1 level stake).

Horse Racing Tips - Thursday, September 12

  • 13:50 Doncaster - Art Design @ 11/2
  • 16:25 Newcastle - Basalt @ 7/2
  • 17:15 Doncaster - Pellitory @ 5/2

13:50 Doncaster - Art Design @ 11/2

The first race of the St Leger meeting is a 6½f nursery, one of five juvenile races on this eight-race card, and there looks to be a formline which stands out here as Art Design and Ghost Run finished third and fourth in a red-hot nursery at Newmarket last month.

The winner is well fancied for the Group 3 Dick Poole on Friday, and both Art Design and Ghost Run can be expected to go close here.

Ghost Run is weighted to reverse Newmarket form with ART DESIGN, but the William Haggas-trained two-year-old is the selection after an improved effort at Southwell recently.

That was an impressive performance coming from off the pace and this track will be suitable if similar tactics are applied. The extra half-furlong should be fine.

16:25 Newcastle - Basalt @ 7/2

Away from Town Moor, the best bet looks to be in the opening juvenile novice at Newcastle. Bear Kode has to give away a winners’ penalty, and he might struggle to give BASALT 7lb after the Archie Watson-trained colt made a nice debut in a decent event at Deauville last month.

Basalt finished fifth on that occasion, well beaten behind the winner Maranoa Charlie, but that horse has since won again at Chantilly, scoring by eight lengths. The sixth, Popeye Doyle, takes his chance in the big sales race at Doncaster. Basalt was a neck in front of him at Deauville, yet this should be a much easier task.

The selection is stepping up a furlong, but there’s plenty of stamina on his dam’s side, so he ought to have a strong chance if handling the Tapeta.

17:15 Doncaster - Pellitory @ 5/2

PELLITORY improved again when getting off the mark at Yarmouth last month in a race run in a good time. It was particularly impressive because he raced up with the pace and still won despite pulling far too hard.

The selection will need to settle a bit better here stepping up to a mile, but the track should suit being similar to Yarmouth, and Sean D Bowen will be claiming 3lb again.

The form of the Yarmouth race has been boosted already, with the second going in at Newcastle on Tuesday, while the seventh and 12th have both since finished placed at decent odds as well.

If the trip is no problem, there’s every chance Pellitory can make it win number two.
