Flat Horse Racing

Newmarket’s July Festival kicks off on Thursday and Flat racing dominates proceedings, with all six meetings across the UK and Ireland taking place on the level.

Newmarket kicks off first and is swiftly followed by Carlisle and Doncaster, while the evening action comes from Leopardstown, Newbury and Epsom. Among my horse racing tips for Thursday fancies is Lead Artist for John and Thady Gosden.

Today's Horse Races

14:25 Newmarket - Electrolyte @ 5/2

Watch out for ELECTROLYTE at Newmarket, as Archie Watson’s colt has already proved himself in this grade and he should have every chance.

Jockey James Doyle always looked confident on Electrolyte when the two-year-old got off the mark at the first time of asking up at Ayr last month. He made all the running and eased clear of his three rivals to score by two and a quarter lengths.

The form is a bit of a mixed bag but it’s clear he was a class above and the fourth was an impressive winner of his next start.

There was only a length between first and fifth in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and Electrolyte was denied by a nose in second. That is arguably the best piece of form on offer and a similar effort would make him hard to beat.

Electrolyte to win 14.25 Newmarket at 5-2

15:35 Newmarket - Giavellotto @ 5/1

GIAVELLOTTO is a two-time Yorkshire Cup winner and 1m4f could suit better than 2m. Marco Botti’s five-year-old is clearly a 1m6f specialist but he should be capable of competing over this trip in this grade.

It was an impressive performance at York when last seen and he got the better of Willie Mullins’ very classy stayer Vauban by a wide margin. Better ground would probably be preferred but the shorter trip can balance that out.

That latest effort was undeniably a career-best and an official rating of 116 surely puts him bang in the mix.

Giavellotto at 5-1

16:45 Newmarket - Lead Artist @ 2/1

The Listed Edmondson Hall Solicitors Sir Henry Cecil Stakes has attracted a field of just six runners and there’s one participant who stands out a mile. John and Thady Gosden run LEAD ARTIST and the unexposed type really could be anything.

There was plenty to like about his debut effort, when he finished second by a nose in the Wood Ditton on the Rowley Mile. First Conquest was the winner that day but Lead Artist gained his revenge in fine style at York next time.

As soon as Kieran Shoemark pressed the button the race was put to bed and he pulled well clear to win by just shy of five lengths. Further progress seems likely on just his third start and the step up in grade is unlikely to prove troublesome on the evidence of his latest run.

The son of Dubawi has an impeccable pedigree and is out of a Group 2 winner. It surely won’t be long before he’s racing at a similar level and this is a good opportunity for him to demonstrate his talent.

Lead Artist to win at 2-1
