Ripon scaled

A quartet of Sunday meetings across Britain and Ireland will round off the weekend's racing.

Flat action is from Newmarket alongside Ripon and Naas, while there is jumps fare from Stratford. Below are my trio of runners to look out for across Sunday's cards.

Horse Racing Tips - Sunday, May 18

  • 14:32 Naas - One Smack Mac @ 10/3
  • 15:40 Ripon – Fluorescence @ 5/4
  • 16:15 Newmarket – Spring Bloom @ 13/2

14:32 Naas - One Smack Mac @ 10/3

Some quality action from Ireland includes the Listed Owenstown Stud Stakes where leading contenders on paper include Dance Night Andday and The Liffey for Ross O'Sullivan and Joseph O'Brien respectively.

They are likely to be in the firing line but ONE SMACK MAC shouldn't be underestimated either for Ger Lyons and Colin Keane.

The Kodiac colt was a 6f good-ground debut winner here last season and was also Listed placed at Fairyhouse over this trip as a juvenile.

He made his comeback in the Listed Cork Stakes (6f, good to firm) last month and was third behind Lady With The Lamp, that rival advertising the form handsomely by scoring again since in the same grade in Britain.

One Smack Mac should be all the sharper for the run and is perhaps underestimated here.

15:40 Ripon – Fluorescence @ 5/4

Class 3 fare at Yorkshire's Garden circuit via the British EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap over 6f. The returning Mae Amor for David O'Meara in a first-time visor has to be respected but she cedes race fitness to Ed Bethell's FLUOESCENCE and the daughter of Twilight Son appeals as the one to beat.

She made a promising winning debut at Southwell on the Tapeta in October and followed that up in powerful style at Redcar (6f, good to firm) at the start of this month on her only start since.

She moved well in that contest and came clear for a three-length win despite still appearing to be learning on the job. This opening mark of 85 may well be underestimating her ability.

15:40 Ripon - Winner Fluorescence

16:15 Newmarket – Spring Bloom @ 13/2

Reigning Profit has notched successive wins at Pontefract and Ripon in recent weeks. He carried a 5lb penalty last time but must now contend with a 7lb higher mark in what is a stronger race.

He might, therefore, be vulnerable and is taken on with the only previous course and distance winner in the line-up, SPRING BLOOM.

The eight-year-old knows this place inside out, with the three most recent of his six career wins coming at Newmarket over 5f/6f.

He won here in August last year off a mark of 75 over 6f and is back on that perch now. He twice ran well in stronger races here and at Goodwood to start his campaign and possibly did too much too soon at Windsor last time.

Back here at this favoured layout and with Tom Marquand a positive jockey booking, he's fancied to notch a first win of 2025.
