There's a total of 54 races across seven meetings - namely the Curragh, Newmarket, Redcar, Ascot, Gowran Park, Southwell and Wolverhampton - on Saturday, with something to cater for all tastes.

Among our horse racing tips for Saturday is a long-distance traveller returning to a scene of their previous success.

Horse Racing Tips - Saturday, October 5

  • 15:00 Ascot - Wiltshire @ 5/1
  • 16:10 Ascot - Queen Of Mougins @ 5/1
  • 17:37 Redcar - Jungle Land @ 6/1

15:00 Ascot - Wiltshire @ 5/1

More than half the field for the Bengough Stakes holds an entry for the Champions Sprint Stakes back here in a couple of weeks. Among those is WILTSHIRE, whose trainer William Haggas already knows the standard of the 6f Group 1 horses, as his Montassib won the Sprint Cup at Haydock last month.

Wiltshire is on a similar sort of curve to where Montassib was a few months ago. He won convincingly at Newbury in April and Newcastle in June before posting a career-best effort in defeat over 5f at Haydock last week.

Wiltshire is much more at home over this 6f trip, and he has plenty of form on soft ground. For all he is stepping out of handicaps, he has little if anything to find on form with many of his rivals and he deserves to be taken seriously.

16:10 Ascot - Queen Of Mougins @ 5/1

Three-year-old QUEEN OF MOUGINS has been improving by the run this year, which is partly down to her own natural development and also because of her connections finding the right conditions for her by iteration.

She kept shaping well at sprint trips while looking a touch shy of pace. Since moving up to 7f, she has run two excellent races in defeat. She was short-headed by a horse that has since won the Ayr Silver Cup and ran a fine third at Group 3 level at Doncaster last time.

The latest piece of the jigsaw is the addition of cheekpieces. Even when sprinting, Queen Of Mougins gave the impression that headgear might straighten her out just enough to help her fulfil her potential. Another step forward would give her leading claims here.

17:37 Redcar - Jungle Land @ 6/1

Rossa Ryan rode at Ascot on Friday and will be at Longchamp on Sunday, but in between he ventures to Redcar on Saturday for six rides. Among his mounts is JUNGLE LAND, an unexposed handicapper who has a lot in his favour.

This horse was second in a couple of maidens before coming here in May, where he won handily. He missed three months after that, and when he returned he was backed into favourite for a Racing League handicap at Southwell. He looked shy of a gallop that day, and raced in a group of two when well beaten at Newmarket last time.

In short, it is much too early to be giving up on Jungle Land. He is dropping in grade here, and returning to conditions that are known to suit him. He can make Ryan's trip worthwhile.
