There are seven scheduled meetings across Britain and Ireland on Saturday, with the headline act coming at Newmarket via the opening Classic of the season, the Qipco 2000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile.

Newmarket is first off and they are soon joined by Goodwood's Premier Raceday card, while they also race on the Flat at Thirsk and Yarmouth and there two UK jumps meetings at Uttoxeter and Hexham alongside the conclusion of the Irish National Hunt season at Punchestown on day five of their major jumps festival.

Amongst our Saturday fancies is a five-year-old sprinter representing Charlie Hills in the Group 3 5f Palace House Stakes on Newmarket's Classic card.

Saturday Racing Tips - May 4

  • 14:05 Goodwood - Orchid Bloom @ 7/2
  • 14:55 Newmarket - Mitbaahy @ 3/1
  • 15:35 Newmarket - City Of Troy @ 4/6

14:05 Goodwood - Orchid Bloom @ 7/2

ORCHID BLOOM is the clear percentage call in the Listed 1m Conqueror Fillies' Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday afternoon.

The ground is going to be testing following significant recent rain and the 104-rated daughter of Farrh is the one to beat according to adjusted official ratings on these terms.

The pick of her form has come on soft or heavy ground and this looks an excellent opportunity to register a third career success following her close second in Listed company at Saint-Cloud latest in September 2023.

14:55 Newmarket - Mitbaahy @ 3/1

MITBAAHY is representing Charlie Hills in the Group 3 5f Palace House Stakes from Newmarket and he would appear to hold rock solid credentials.

Hills trained the winner of this race through Khaadem in 2022 and it is always an encouraging pointer when a trainer knows what type of horse is required for a particular target.

The selection arrives 5-18 with three of those wins coming over this 5f trip on good ground including a Group 3 contest at Newbury in September 2022.

Seven winners of this race since 2014 were officially rated 106+ and the 109-rated Mitbaahy comes out top according to adjusted official ratings on these favourable terms.

He produced a notably encouraging fourth on his reappearance last month in the Group 3 6f Abernant Stakes on this course and he should be right in the mix once again back at the minimum trip.

15:35 Newmarket - City Of Troy @ 4/6

CITY OF TROY is a favourite well worth having on side when he makes his eagerly awaited return to action in the first Classic of the season, the Group 1 1m Qipco 2000 Guineas on Saturday afternoon.

Despite saddling a record-breaking ten winners of this contest since 1998, few of Aidan O'Brien's horses will have attracted more column inches ahead of his three-year-old reappearance than the unbeaten son of the US Triple Crown-winner Justify.

He registered an RPR of 103 in winning a 7f Curragh maiden on good ground on his debut in July 2023 and then routed his Group 2 Superlative Stakes opposition by almost seven-lengths a fortnight later.

The reopposing runner-up Haatem won the Group 3 Craven Stakes by over three-lengths over this course and distance last month and City Of Troy would go on to register a formidable RPR of 124 when landing the Group 1 7f Dewhurst Stakes on this course on soft ground latest in October.

The step up to a mile on this course should suit and one of his 10 rivals is going to have to find considerable improvement to break his winning sequence.
