Sandown racecourse

It’s a typically busy Saturday on the racing front with seven meetings in Britain and Ireland, including three live on ITV. First off is Beverley before they go at the Curragh, Sandown, Chester, Newton Abbot, Lingfield and Chelmsford.

Among my horse racing tips for Saturday is a John Gosden-trained juvenile who bids to land the featured Solario Stakes at Sandown for a record seventh time.

Horse Racing Tips - Saturday, August 31

  • 14:25 Sandown - Spiritual @ 11/1
  • 15:00 Sandown - Balmacara @ 5/2
  • 15:35 Sandown - Field Of Gold @ 6/4

14:25 Sandown - Spiritual @ 11/1

It could be a good day for the John and Thady Gosden team and they can kick off by winning the Atalanta Stakes with the improving three-year-old SPIRITUAL.

The lightly raced filly was having just her fifth start when she ran away with a similar Listed event over course and distance last month by a length and a quarter, springing a surprise.

That was an impressive display and she was dominant from the front, yet she appears to have been overlooked in the market for this contest following a poor run last time.

However, that came in France at Deauville and maybe she didn’t travel well. She is better than she was able to show that day and will be suited by returning to this course.

She stormed up Sandown’s finishing hill on her last visit here and the course often suits those who are ridden prominently, as she will be here.

The faster ground is an unknown, but she has form on good going that suggests she might be capable of being competitive and it’s worth taking a chance at the 10/1 on offer.

15:00 Sandown - Balmacara @ 5/2

This competitive 1m2f handicap appears to revolve around the lightly raced three-year-olds Involvement and BALMACARA, with preference for the latter.

The son of New Bay looked good when winning twice at Doncaster in the spring and bounced back from a below-par run at Epsom when second at this track last month.

Balmacara beat all bar the impressive winner Persica that day and the front two pulled 13 lengths clear of the remainder of the field in a good time for the grade. That form looks even better now because Persica has since finished third in Group 3 company at Windsor.

The handicapper has nudged Balmacara up 6lb in the weights, but he will be having just his sixth start here and only his second in the hood that appeared to bring improvement last time. He looks well capable of making the progress required to defy the assessor.

15:35 Sandown - Field Of Gold @ 6/4

This looks like a good opportunity for John Gosden to break the longstanding record that he currently shares with Sir Henry Cecil by becoming the winning-most trainer in the Solario Stakes at Sandown. Gosden and son Thady can strike with the promising FIELD OF GOLD.

Field Of Gold is a son of Gosden’s 2013 winner of this race, Kingman, and he looked to have a bright future when following his promising debut third at Doncaster with an impressive victory at Newmarket’s July meeting last month.

There was a lot to like about the way that Field Of Gold won that day as he travelled powerfully and kicked clear to score by three and a quarter lengths in a good time.

There should be plenty of further improvement to come from Field Of Gold now that he steps up in class and he looks every inch a Group performer in the making. He can prove up to it.
