It’s the third and final day of the Cambridgeshire meeting on Saturday and we have a belting card to look forward to at Newmarket.

My horse racing tips for the afternoon includes two from HQ - including a selection in the big handicap - and one from Haydock.

Horse Racing Tips - Saturday, September 28

  • 13:30 Haydock - Whiskey Pete @ 7/2
  • 14:25 Newmarket - Daylight @ 11/4
  • 15:40 Newmarket - Paddy The Squire e/w @ 28/1

13:30 Haydock - Whiskey Pete @ 7/2

WHISKEY PETE's two runs on soft ground were comfortably his best on Racing Post Ratings and it is easy to imagine the in-form Ralph Beckett nursing another success out of him in the mile handicap at Haydock with ground conditions to suit.

A career record of 1-9 does a disservice to Whiskey Pete, who has run plenty of good races.

Challenging by the unfavoured far rail did him few favours in the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot, while he didn’t get the best of runs either when well fancied next time at York.

However, it was more like it from Whiskey Pete back at Ascot this month on his return from two months off in a good three-year-old handicap.

He was nicely clear of the third while giving the impression dropping back to a mile would see him to decent effect. This looks an ideal set of circumstances for the son of Night Of Thunder.

14:25 Newmarket - Daylight @ 11/4

Conditions turning testing at Newmarket will provide no worries for DAYLIGHT in the Cheveley Park and the French raider looks to have an outstanding chance.

The two unbeaten fillies who head the market, Babouche and Lake Victoria, have a bit to prove on the conditions, while this daughter of mud-lover Earthlight ploughed through them when bolting up on her debut at Chantilly in May.

She has continued to progress since and her latest third against the boys in the Prix Morny can be marked up, as she travelled powerfully from off the pace but the gaps failed to open until it was too late.

The race was controlled from the front by Whistlejacket, a warm order to land the Middle Park 35 minutes later.

15:40 Newmarket - Paddy The Squire e/w @ 28/1

It may be dangerous to underestimate PADDY THE SQUIRE for Iain Jardine in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.

It appears that Jardine, who knows how to pick up one of the country’s biggest handicaps as he landed the Ebor several seasons ago, has laid Paddy The Squire out for it.

He has only started to fulfil his potential this season, going down fighting behind subsequent impressive winner and the reopposing Theoryofeverything at Hamilton on his belated return in August, before producing a similar effort in defeat at Chester this month.

The son of Golden Horn is at home on testing conditions and has been drawn in stall 21, the winning box in two of the past six seasons.

This is a Super Extra Place Race, with six on offer instead of four at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets.
