Horse Racing Tips: Don’t overlook course specialist Gweedore at Musselburgh

There’s a mix of Flat and National Hunt action on offer on Saturday and no fewer than eight meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland.

Cork kicks us off, before the afternoon action continues at Haydock, Musselburgh, Huntingdon, Newton Abbot and Fairyhouse. Wolverhampton’s seven-race all-weather fixture provides the evening entertainment. We have three strong fancies to follow across the afternoon and they include one for trainer Katie Scott that has an excellent course record at Musselburgh.

14:25 Musselburgh - Gweedore @ 9/2

It’s always a good idea to consider previous course form as it can provide a significant advantage when trying to pick out winners. Katie Scott’s GWEEDORE certainly knows his way around Musselburgh, where he rarely runs a bad race.

The eight-year-old has had 14 starts at the course, winning five times and placing on a further seven occasions. That includes a solid second over course and distance last week and he reappears off the same mark.

He bumped into a progressive winner that day and it’s easy to make the case that a similar performance here could be enough to go one better. Scott’s gelding has won on ground between good and soft, so the underfoot conditions won’t be a problem.

His last course victory came off this mark in April 2023 and he was an easy winner that day. Making virtually all of the running, he was always in control and pulled nicely clear to score by two-and-a-quarter-lengths.

15:15 Haydock - Glynn @ 7/1

GLYNN started his career with Nicky Henderson and he won once in eight starts for that yard. Fences have been the making of him this term and he’s progressing well, scoring three times over the larger obstacles.

The first of those wins came in good style at Newton Abbot in August and he jumped noticeably well that day. Anthony Honeyball’s gelding was always up with the pace and went nicely clear approaching the final fence.

Connections tried throwing him into Grade 2 company at Wincanton in November and he was a little outclassed, finishing fourth and 37 lengths behind the winner. Now back in handicap company, he should be much more competitive this time around.

Quick ground is important to him and having won on good to firm over the summer, he’s likely to thrive in these conditions. His second behind Numitor at Wincanton in October was a fair effort and he can reverse the form here, with a 10lb weight swing in his favour.

15:35 Musselburgh - Wise Eagle @ 7/1

Adam Nicol’s WISE EAGLE could be the one to side with in this competitive event, as five of his eight turf wins have come over 1m6f. The son of Free Eagle is also a course specialist with four Flat victories and a hurdles success to his name at Musselburgh.

He won this race last year and although life will be harder off a 5lb higher mark, there’s enough evidence to suggest he’s more than capable of making his presence felt.

Wise Eagle’s last Flat start resulted in a second-place finish off a 1lb lower mark at Newcastle in January and a 1lb rise is pretty fair on that evidence. Third in Group 3 company at York last summer, a reproduction of that form would give him every chance.
