Flat Horse Racing

Jump racing dominates across the seven meetings taking place throughout the day across the UK and Ireland on Saturday.

First off though is the transferred Doncaster Flat finale meeting on the Tapeta at Newcastle, before they go over jumps at Gowran Park, Kelso, Aintree, Down Royal and Wincanton, and finish off on the Flat on the Polytrack at Chelmsford.

Amongst our Saturday fancies is a talented novice chaser, representing Lucinda Russell, looking to gain some quick compensation at Aintree after unseating his rider Stephen Mulqueen on his return to action at Carlisle last month.

Saturday Racing Tips

  • 13.00 Aintree - Giovinco @ 8/15
  • 14.05 Newcastle - Sense Of Duty @ 11/8
  • 14.25 Wincanton - Blackjack Magic @ 6/1

13.00 Aintree - Giovinco @ 8/15

Five horses are set to go to post in the Class 3 3m1f Novices' Limited Handicap Chase at Aintree, although My Bobby Dazzler's participation must remain in some doubt after his slightly unlucky but well-beaten eighth at Newbury on Thursday.

The race features one of the most likely winners of the whole day in the shape of Lucinda Russell's bright chasing prospect GIOVINCO.

The selection cost £85,000 shortly after winning an Irish point on his return to action at Dromahane on testing ground in this month last year.

The six-year-old landed his hurdles and stable debut in a common canter at Ayr in the spring and defied a penalty in similar fashion on heavy ground at Carlisle 15 days later.

In April, he stepped up in trip to 3m on a good to soft surface at Perth and ran out an impressive 12-length winner of that Listed Novice Hurdle.

The son of Walk In The Park was sent off 5/4 to make a winning debut over regulation fences at Carlisle last month.

He was travelling just as well as the winner, after displaying an encouraging technique up to that point, when making a frustrating, novice error and unseating his jockey Stephen Mulqueen three out. He is strongly fancied to gain some quick compensation.

14.05 Newcastle - Sense Of Duty @ 5/4

The Listed 6f Wentworth Stakes has been transferred to Newcastle's Tapeta after fears that the original fixture at Doncaster would be lost to the weather, and that switch must be music to the ears of SENSE OF DUTY's trainer William Haggas, who is 10-28 with his runners in the past fortnight.

Sense Of Duty is the only course-and-distance winner in the field and she registered a Racing Post Rating of 116 when landing the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes here in June.

A reproduction of that level of form should suffice, if the return to this venue revives, after a couple of lesser efforts on testing turf this autumn.

14.25 Wincanton - Blackjack Magic @ 6/1

The feature race at Wincanton is the Class 1 3m1f 62nd Badger Beer Premier Handicap Chase and the highest-profile horse is the remarkable Frodon, representing Paul Nicholls.

Frodon registered Nicholls' 11th success in this race, at his local course, when carrying 12st to victory off 158 in 2022. He is set the same task on this follow-up attempt, on ground likely to be riding on the easier side of good to soft on this occasion.

Frodon is classy and clearly the one to beat, but don't sleep on the each-way claims of BLACKJACK MAGIC, the pick in our opinion from Anthony Honeyball's four runners.

The selection is receiving 26lb from Frodon at statistically the right end of the handicap and he should be staying on when plenty of others have cried enough.
