A typically busy Saturday is in store across Britain and Ireland with no less than six meetings and 45 races taking place.

Afternoon jumps fare comes from Doncaster, Kelso, Navan and Newbury, while they go on the all-weather at Newcastle and Southwell into the evening.

Our trio of Saturday fancies includes one for Sam Thomas in the Newbury feature race.

Horse Racing Tips - Saturday, March 1

  • 14:55 Kelso – Laganhill @ 17/2
  • 15:45 Newbury – Vincenzo @ 11/2
  • 15:50 Navan – El Fabiolo @ 4/6

14:55 Kelso – Laganhill @ 17/2

The Premier Novices' Hurdle is a Grade 2 event on Kelso's big jumps card and will see Chart Topper attempting to give Willie and Patrick Mullins a win with their first runner at the Scottish Borders venue.

He's got more on his plate after his Wetherby novice win under a penalty, with promising rivals like Vanderpoel for the Ben Pauling team and Castle Carrock for Alan King likely to contend, but the Henry Daly-trained LAGANHILL might trump them all.

He beat a dual subsequent winner when making a winning racecourse bow at Haydock in December and had no worries under his penalty since at Bangor at the start of February. He looks well worth a go in this grade and should provide some each-way value in a warm race.

14:55 Kelso - Winner Laganhill

15:45 Newbury – Vincenzo @ 11/2

The Greatwood Gold Cup is the feature at Newbury and the two-and-a-half-miler ought to prove on the sharp side for Kandoo Kid, as Paul Nicholls' charge returns to the scene of his big November win. The Grand National is a key spring aspiration for him.

Nicholls has bagged this race nine times since 2006 and his second string, Beau Balko, can't be dismissed in haste under claimer Ben Bromley, but it's another rider with a claim, Dylan Johnston, that might have the winner under him in VINCENZO.

The Sam Thomas-trained seven-year-old is 2-3 over fences, scoring at Windsor and Sandown either side of playing second fiddle to Kalif Du Berlais at Cheltenham on New Year's Day, when he was up against it giving weight to a progressive young horse.

He found plenty when asked at Sandown since under this pilot and the runner-up has franked that form by subsequently scoring at Ayr. Up in trip, he could have more to give.

15:50 Navan – El Fabiolo @ 4/6

Over in Ireland, the Grade 2 Webster Cup Chase takes centre stage at Navan and Willie Mullins accounts for three of the five runners.

Last-time-out Irish Gold Cup runner-up Grangeclare West joins Gentleman De Mee but there is no doubting that EL FABIOLO is the key runner here.

Paul Townend partners the 174-rated chaser in the Simon Munir and Isaac Souede silks as he bids to get back on track following his fall at the Dublin Racing Festival last month.

He didn't get far enough to ascertain his well-being but he was 3/1 second-favourite in that Grade 1 event and plenty of those closest to him have suggested that a fall might be the making of a horse, known for his jumping errors, even though he had never previously hit the deck.

That could be true and this first crack at an extended trip is also very interesting. He's the best horse in this field and could be Ryanair Chase-bound if he dismisses these rivals.

15:50 Navan - Winner El Fabiolo
