Monday Racing Tips: Continuance the one to beat at Fontwell

The racing eases in quality after the excitement of the Cheltenham Festival, but there are no fewer than five meetings across Britain and Ireland to keep us entertained on Monday. Wexford kicks us off before the action continues at Down Royal, Fontwell and Southwell, while Wolverhampton provides the evening entertainment.

Amongst our strongest fancies on Monday is one for trainer Martin Keighley at Fontwell who is unpenalised for his win last time out and is therefore well set to follow up.

15:12 Fontwell - Continuance @ 6/4

A winner on the Flat too, CONTINUANCE left a very good impression when winning well on his first start over hurdles at Sedgefield in October. He was a little too keen in the early stages, but still had plenty left in the tank and went on to score by 19 lengths.

Whilst the form probably doesn’t amount to much, he did it in good style and there was plenty to like about the performance. Things didn’t go to plan when put into a Grade 2 at Cheltenham next time, but he looked on top before running out at Catterick after that.

Martin Keighley’s four-year-old got back on track when switching to handicaps at Ludlow last time out and he travelled well throughout the race, going on to score by five lengths. The form has been boosted too, with the third winning impressively since.

It’s hard to argue with an 8lb rise on the evidence of that performance and he looks like one to keep on side until his limitations are exposed.

16:27 Wolverhampton - Paradoxical @ 3/1

It has been a good year for Jennie Candlish on the Flat so far and she has maintained a more than healthy strike-rate of 22 per cent in this sphere. Also in good recent form with a strike-rate of 23 per cent in the last fortnight, now is a good time to catch her.

PARADOXICAL has been progressing well since the turn of the year and the son of Saxon Warrior completed a hat-trick when winning here over a furlong further recently. He’s carrying a 5lb penalty as a result and you would imagine the handicapper will go beyond that.

Winning well over course and distance before that, the return to this shorter trip is unlikely to be an issue and it could be a while before the handicapper catches up.

16:40 Southwell - Aggagio @ 3/1

Gary & Josh Moore have been in much better form in recent weeks and AGGAGIO returned to winning ways with a very comfortable victory at Warwick earlier this month. You would imagine a similar performance would be enough and he avoids a penalty for that success.

This horse has won off a mark as high as 110 in the past and his recent victory came in similar conditions. Caoilin Quinn is booked for the ride once again, having been on board last time, and hopefully we’ll see a similar result.

Now is the perfect time to catch him and, provided his last run hasn’t come too soon, a follow-up victory could very well be on the cards.
