National Hunt racing provides the bulk of the action on Monday, with three of the four meetings taking place over obstacles.

Among my horse racing tips for the afternoon is a chase debutant for trainer Evan Williams who looks to be off a very reasonable opening mark.

Horse Racing Tips - Monday, December 16

  • 12:22 Southwell - No Risk Des Flos @ 4/1
  • 13:10 Plumpton - D'Jo Dela Barriere @ 5/1
  • 15:22 Southwell - Job @ 7/1

12:22 Southwell - No Risk Des Flos @ 4/1

Both Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen have been amongst the winners in recent weeks and the very dangerous pair are represented by NO RISK DES FLOS here. A long overdue return to winning ways is anticipated here as his best form tells us he’s very well treated.

It was a more than reasonable performance at Stratford where he finished second on his seasonal reappearance, but he was never going to stand a chance against the winner L’Eau du Sud.

That rival won off 138 that day and has since shot up to 152 after winning Grade 2 and Grade 1 novice chases. No Risk Des Flos was also well clear of the third and may well improve for the run.

Currently on a rating of 126, the best performance of his career so far was a three-length win off 8lb higher and that makes him a very interesting candidate here.

13:10 Plumpton - D'Jo Dela Barriere @ 5/1

Evan Williams runs D’JO DELA BARRIERE here and it could be significant that connections have swiftly decided to go over fences. He was a very comfortable winner of a Hereford novice hurdle last time out and there was plenty to like about that performance.

Whilst the form doesn’t amount to much, it was more the style of his victory that suggested there could be more to come. Williams’ five-year-old made all the running and managed to win by 13 lengths with a very professional display.

It would appear that connections are expecting bigger things over fences as he probably had more to give over hurdles. A mark of 115 certainly doesn’t look outrageous and he could be the one to side with on that evidence.

15:22 Southwell - Job @ 7/1

Look out for Toby Lawes’ runner JOB here, as the thoroughly unexposed hurdler is entitled to find significant improvement on just his third start over hurdles and first in handicap company.

It was a respectable effort from the five-year-old when finishing fourth behind The New Lion in a bumper at Market Rasen in April and the second boosted the form by winning his next start.

Job did well to finish third on hurdles debut at Wetherby, despite jumping to his right on a few occasions, and he showed more than enough to suggest he’s capable of winning races over timber.

With that in mind, his disappointing fourth at Uttoxeter after that was a bit of a head-scratcher, but it would be unfair not to give him a few more chances.

An opening mark of 106 doesn’t look too unreasonable and progress could well be on the cards.
