Grand national aintree

It's day two of the Grand National Festival at Aintree on Friday and there is another excellent afternoon of racing in prospect at Liverpool.

There are four Grade 1 races, including the Melling Chase, to look forward to on Ladies' Day with a seven-race card beginning at 13:45.

We've got three picks for Friday's action at Aintree, including Romeo Coolio in the TrustATrader Top Novices' Hurdle (14:55) for Gordon Elliott.

Aintree Friday Tips

  • 14:20 Aintree – Steel Ally @ 9/1
  • 14:55 Aintree – Romeo Coolio @ 6/5
  • 16:05 Aintree – The King Of Prs @ 16/1

14:20 Aintree – Steel Ally @ 9/1

Sam Thomas is a canny trainer and he saddles STEEL ALLY in this Premier handicap after a career-best performance in the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell in February.

Dylan Johnston gave him a fine ride that afternoon, increasing the tempo from the third-last, and he looked the most likely winner jumping the last only for Nemean Lion to rally and get up close to the line.

It was a stellar effort from Steel Ally, nonetheless, and rider Johnston can claim a handy 3lb in the saddle on Friday.

He's unexposed at this intermediate trip and is expected to go well under a positive ride with FIVE places on offer each-way with Betfred.

14:55 Aintree – Romeo Coolio @ 6/5

Gordon Elliott's ROMEO COOLIO won a Grade 1 at Leopardstown by nine lengths over Christmas and he arrives on Merseyside following a fine third in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham on his only subsequent start.

He gave best to Kopek Des Bordes and William Munny up the Cheltenham hill, but it is likely that all three are well above average and one of Romeo Coolio's main market rivals on Friday, Salvator Mundi, finished 10 lengths behind him in the Supreme.

Romeo Coolio was having his first start of 2025 in the Cotswolds so should still have plenty to offer as he seeks further Grade 1 success.

16:05 Aintree – The King Of Prs @ 16/1

THE KING OF PRS is just one horse bidding to continue a wonderful spring for Gold Cup-winning trainer Gavin Cromwell at Aintree.

For the second year running, The King Of Prs found the Grand Annual at Cheltenham a struggle. However, his form this season has been otherwise progressive and some of it reads rather well.

This will be the longest trip he has faced over fences but his 2m1f soft-ground Grade 3 Fairyhouse win in January gives some hope he will relish it.

Conor Stone-Walsh knows him well and takes off a handy 3lb, and Cromwell recently suggested that is like getting weight off for free given the jockey's qualities in the saddle.

A big run could be on the cards at generous odds if he takes to the National fences on Friday afternoon.
