Horse Racing Tips: Passing Well can land the Surrey National

Five meetings take place this Friday across the UK and Ireland. First off is Catterick, before they go at Lingfield and Newcastle. This evening sees two more fixtures on the all-weather at Dundalk and Southwell.

My horse racing tips for Friday is headed by one for trainer Jamie Snowden which has been going close this season, and a return to the site of his last win could be the boost he needs.

14:45 Lingfield - Passing Well @ 5/1

PASSING WELL has been the epitome of consistency this season, however it has unfortunately not brought him much success. From his three runs this campaign he has achieved two second places and a third, which came last time out at Wincanton.

The story of his season has been repeated in each of those outings. He races prominently, makes the occasional mistake in his jumping but travels strongly throughout, giving himself every chance to reach the line first, only to be outpaced in the closing stages of the race and have to settle for a place.

He has been a frustrating horse to follow, but the step up to a marathon three miles five furlongs could be exactly what he needs to reverse his fortunes, as he has shown that he has bags of stamina and a willingness not to give up.

Additionally, in his favour is that he is now back at the site of his last chase win and all that could prove the catalyst he needs to kick-start his season.

16:45 Dundalk - Movin And Groovin @ 11/4

Having spent the early part of her career on the turf with very limited success, MOVIN AND GROOVIN was tried for the first time on the all-weather in October and connections have not looked back since, as she has improved with every run.

She started off her all-weather career with mid-table finish and in the process took her first bit of prize money. The improvement has continued throughout this winter, culminating in her first win at the beginning of the month.

She won in impressive fashion over six furlongs, running strongly early on before facing significant pressure in the closing stages, but she stuck to her task gamely and made all in a performance that caught the eye.

She followed that with a respectable third place last time out when tried over a mile. She was running under a penalty for her win and although she was prominent early on she was no match for the front two and weakened in the closing stages, which suggest that she did not quite see out the trip.

Today’s drop back to seven furlongs seems a good route to take as she looked to have found six furlongs a little sharp and a mile a bit too far. She has every chance of going well again.

20:00 Southwell - Master Of Combat @ 4/1

Despite being the winner of four all-weather races, MASTER OF COMBAT can be inconsistent. Having won at Wolverhampton in September he then stepped up in class and ran no sort of race, finishing some way back in eighth place, which will have left connections scratching their heads.

However, he has bounced back into some sort of form since and has finished second in back-to-back races, including last time out at Lingfield. He ran well at Lingfield, but was outpaced in the closing stages, unable to catch the winner, who powered home.

The suggestion is that he is in reasonable form and a mark of 77 seems manageable. If he is on his game and can reproduce his previous two runs he has a chance to go one better this evening.
