Horse Racing Tips: Spanish Star can land Goodwood spoils plus two from Newmarket

A total of seven meetings take place across the UK and Ireland on Friday, with action taking place at York, Newmarket, Ffos La, Hamilton, Killarney, Kilbeggan and Goodwood.

13:20 Newmarket - Elmonjed @ 11/2 

A field of 11 are set to battle it out in the second race at Newmarket - a Listed Stakes over 6f - and this looks like a good chance for Elmonjed to strike.

Last seen at Goodwood in the Stewards’ Cup when finishing 19th of 27 runners, a line can be put through that performance as he was drawn on the wrong side and was never able to get involved.

Before that run, the four-year-old put in a superb display when scoring at York, travelling powerful as he sliced effortlessly through the field to win with plenty in hand and showing a real turn of foot.

Elmonjed’s only previous outing at Newmarket came back in April this year and there were plenty of positives to take from the fourth-placed effort that day.

William Haggas’s charge was three lengths behind winner More Thunder, who has gone on to land a Group Two since, while conceding 9lb and that form looks strong heading into Friday’s race.

16:20 Newmarket - Venezuelan @ 2/5

Just three go to post in the finale at Newmarket - a Handicap over a mile and a half - but the one who looks to be the most progressive is the Ralph Beckett-trained Venezuelan.

The three-year-old arrives on the back of a 13-length maiden success at Lingfield Park two years ago, blowing away his three rivals to score easily.

Venezuelan had been beaten in a handicap prior to that victory off the same mark, although that came in a stronger race at Ascot and was his first attempt over this trip. All things considered, it was a good effort.

The Teme Valley-owned gelding has no issues with small fields where the tempo is likely to be steadier, and another win can be chalked up.

19:48 Goodwood - Spanish Star @ 17/2

Spanish Star, a veteran at 10-years-old, makes his 85th racecourse start when lining up in the finale at Goodwood and he has already shown that he retains plenty of enthusiasm for the game, highlighted by a win at Newbury earlier this season.

He may not quite possess the same ability as he did a few years ago, but he remains a reliable and consistent performer who now returns to his beloved Goodwood, where he has struck four times in 15 appearances at the popular West Sussex venue.

Spanish Star’s last few runs here came from a much higher mark, when he no longer had the class to be competitive off 90, but having dropped several pounds in the handicap, this admirable campaigner is well worth another chance in easier company.
