Horse racing

Flat racing holds sway across Britain and Ireland on Friday with eight meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the summer evening.

First off is Newbury before they go to Killarney, Haydock Park, Nottingham, Down Royal, Newmarket, Hamilton Park and Pontefract. Amongst our Friday fancies is one who is having his first run for trainer Mark Loughnane and the change of scenery could spark a major revival.

Horse Racing Tips - Friday, July 19

  • 14:05 Haydock Park - Monopolise @ 14/1
  • 17:30 Hamilton Park - Jorge Alvares @ 5/4
  • 19:10 Hamilton Park - Kalpana @ 5/6

Today's Horse Races

14:05 Haydock Park - Monopolise @ 14/1

Formerly with the Ed Walker yard, MONOPOLISE is having his first start for Mark Loughnane in the opening mile apprentice handicap and the son of Showcasing could be well treated after a little break.

Last seen finishing last of nine runners on the all-weather over this trip at Lingfield in February, the run can be excused as he missed the break by a couple of lengths and failed to get into it on a sharp and frantic track.

With it looking like the ground will have soft in the description, we can take encouragement from the fact Monopolise won on soft ground on handicap debut at Newmarket a couple of years back so conditions should be fine for him.

A winner over 1m at Yarmouth from a mark of 75 this time last year, he is now 4lb lower in the weights so if Loughnane has him ready to roll, he looks well treated.

17:30 Hamilton Park - Jorge Alvares @ 5/4

Trainer Karl Burke knows how to get one ready for victory first time out so 58,000gns yearling Mr Fantastic is worth a market check, but the race revolves around Kevin Ryan's JORGE ALVARES in the opening 6f maiden at Hamilton.

Ryan has a brilliant 21 per cent strike-rate at the Scottish track in the last five years and the yard have won this race three times since 2011 so it's an event that they like to target.

Jorge Alvares made his debut in a good York novice in May where he finished third, and the winner holds a Group 1 entry. Next time he finished third at Leicester where he hit a flat spot but stayed on again at the death, but he sets a solid standard here.

19:10 Hamilton Park - Kalpana @ 5/6

Last but not least, Juddmonte's KALPANA should be too strong for her rivals in the 1m3f Listed Glasgow Stakes for trainer Andrew Balding with in-form PJ McDonald aboard.

The filly was sent off favourite for the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot when last seen finishing third to Aidan O'Brien's Port Fairy, who happens to be a leading contender for the Irish Oaks this weekend.

Kalpana takes a big drop in class here and looked a classy horse in the making when routing a handicap field by 10-lengths at Newmarket in April. She should be able to dominate her rivals in a very winnable race.
