York Racecourse

It’s a busy day of action on Friday with seven meetings across Britain and Ireland, including five on the Flat.

The final day of York’s Dante meeting is the main focus with the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup looking like a fascinating renewal.

We’ve picked out three selections from the card at York including a hat-trick seeker who could be hard to beat.

Friday Racing Tips - May 17

  • 14:15 York - It Ain’t Two @ 5/1
  • 15:15 York - Devoted Queen @ 9/4
  • 15:45 York - Tower Of London @ 6/4

14:15 York - It Ain’t Two @ 5/1

There are plenty with claims in York’s opener on Monday, the Marygate Fillies’ Stakes, a race that often produces smart juveniles.

Karl Burke has won the last two renewals and his trio are interesting, but Hugo Palmer’s It Ain’t Two might take some beating.

The daughter of Calyx defied odds of 18-1 when springing a shock at Newmarket on her debut last month and there are a few reasons to mark that effort up. The filly was slowly away and looked green in the early part of the contest but she seemed to get her act together quickly and made a great deal of progress in the middle of the race, showing good speed in the process.

She then struggled to handle the dip, looking unbalanced, but overcame all of this to score by just under a length. With a normal amount of improvement from first run to second, she ought to be right in the mix here and her starting price on debut suggests she wasn’t fully wound up for that run at HQ.

She had some of these rivals in behind and might be able to confirm the form on a flat track, which ought to suit her.

15:15 York - Devoted Queen @ 9/4

There’s another Listed race for fillies a little later on the card and it’s probably a more straightforward puzzle to solve than the opener.

Devoted Queen is unbeaten in two runs so far, winning on soft at Newmarket on her sole start as a juvenile before taking a step forward from that to win at Kempton on her seasonal return, idling in the closing stages when the race was in the bag.

Fast ground on turf could easily be her thing given her pedigree and a first-time hood should help her settle better. If she comes on from last month’s return, as many of Charlie Appleby’s string have done this season, she ought to be hard to beat.

15:45 York - Tower Of London @ 6/4

It looks like a cracking renewal of the feature race on the card, the Yorkshire Cup, and the hat-trick seeking favourite Tower Of London could take some stopping.

Connections will be delighted that there is not much more rain forecast with the ground likely to dry out nicely for Friday and Tower Of London was impressive when winning the Dubai Gold Cup last time out on a similar surface to what he should get at York.

He has to concede weight to his rivals, but he looks up to the task and this track should play to his strengths with a long straight that should allow him to go through the gears and pick off the rest of the field.
