Horse Racing Tips: Need for speed on Friday

There’s Flat and Jumps racing across the UK and Ireland on Friday, with eight meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the evening. 

Among our horse racing tips for the day is a course-and-distance winner who looks ready to get back on the scoresheet at York.

13:30 Sandown - Jenever @ 10/3

With conditions set to suit and having proved he can win from a high draw here already, last year’s winner JENEVER can make it back-to-back victories.

Now just 2lbs higher than when taking this last year, the six-year-old is also 3lb below the mark off which he was narrowly beaten in another course-and-distance contest in July.

He has been slowly coming to the boil in his three runs this season, and given a rare outing over six furlongs last time he was bang there a furlong out before fading late.

Regular partner Lewis Edmunds returns to the saddle on Friday, and with bundles of pace in the race the pair can travel and swoop late to repeat last year’s win.

13:50 York - Feel The Need each-way @ 12/1

Last year’s first three return in this apprentices race over seven furlongs, and it is Michael Herrington’s FEEL THE NEED, second last year, who can come out on top this time around after catching the eye last time.

Andrea Pinna’s 7lb claim looks valuable against other apprentices in this race, and means that the five-year old is a whopping 22lb better off with last year’s winner Tolstoy, who beat him by two lengths.

Tolstoy may have been trained with this race in mind, but that weight difference will be very hard to overcome, and the selection is back down to his last winning mark after some indifferent performances recently.

Indeed he was dropped a further 2lb for his encouraging seventh-place finish over course-and-distance last time when Tom Marquand got the fractions spot on from the front and nothing was able to make much inroads from behind.

Granted a bit more luck this race promises to see the selection in an even better light and he can go one better than last year.

14:40 Sandown - Andaleep @ 13/2

Considering the record he has over this course-and-distance, it’s a little surprising Daniel and Claire Kubler’s ANDALEEP hasn’t run here since September 2023, although considering his versatility and consistency he always has plenty of options.

In 11 starts at Sandown he has won four, been second twice and third once, and although he was racing off lower marks in those days, he has been competitive off marks around and higher than Friday’s plenty of times in the past year.

In three starts this year he’s run one poor race on his comeback, followed by useful performances in a Class 2 on Good Friday and when third at Newmarket last time.

That was his best run at a course he has no great record at, and with fastish ground more suitable for him than for many of his opponents, it will be no great surprise to see him improve his Sandown record in this one.
