Newmarket Racecourse

Flat racing holds sway across Britain and Ireland on Friday, with seven meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the evening. First off is Dundalk before they go at Newmarket, York, Ascot, Kilbeggan, Chepstow and Chester.

Among our horse racing tips for Friday is one for trainer Charlie Appleby, who has an excellent record at this meeting.

Horse Racing Tips - Friday, July 12

  • 15:00 Newmarket - Tenerife Sunshine e/w @ 14/1
  • 15:35 Newmarket - Running Lion @ 11/4

14:25 Newmarket - Mountain Breeze @ 4/1

Prior to this week, there had been only three Irish-trained winners at the Newmarket July Meeting in the last five years and two of those came on the Saturday. Aidan O'Brien was responsible for all three too.

It typically pays to side with British runners at this meeting and MOUNTAIN BREEZE is the choice in the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes in the hands of William Buick for trainer Charlie Appleby.

The filly looked a really good prospect when landing her first two races at the track over 5f and 6f, latterly when putting in a devastating display.

As a consequence she was sent off a short price for the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, where she finished just behind the reopposing Heavens Gate, but she has the scope to improve and put that blip behind her on slower ground.

Today's Horse Races

15:00 Newmarket - Tenerife Sunshine e/w @ 14/1

In the following 1m6f handicap, a competitive field of 12 are set to go to post and this is a race that Team Johnston usually do very well in, saddling three of the last five winners of the contest.

The Charlie Johnston yard has two runners in the form of Knightswood and TENERIFE SUNSHINE, but the latter intrigues the most. He didn't see out 2m4f in the Ascot Stakes last time so the drop in trip is a big plus.

Talented Billy Loughnane takes the ride on the son of Lope De Vega, who put in a gutsy performance when winning a 2m Goodwood handicap on his penultimate outing. Just 4lb higher now, he has to enter the equation.

This is an Extra Place Race, with Betfred paying four places instead of three at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets.

15:35 Newmarket - Running Lion @ 11/4

John Gosden is bidding to win the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes for the third time in five years and RUNNING LION should give him every chance of doing so under Oisin Murphy.

It wasn't Murphy's finest moment at Epsom last month when he got trapped on the rail and had to settle for an unlucky last-place finish on the day, albeit only beaten just over three lengths.

Murphy made no mistake in the Duke Of Cambridge at Ascot last time though, as the Roaring Lion filly finally came good again in style, this time given a canny ride from the front.

Running Lion could have all of her rivals off the bridle a long way from home and soft ground won't be an inconvenience.
