When you think back just a decade or so to when Paul Nicholls’ yard was dominating the sport with the likes of Denman and the wonderful Kauto Star, it might be a surprise that the trainer only has the one Grand National winner to his name. That came in 2012 when Neptune Collonges came through, winning by a nose.
Since then it has been a dry spell, but he sends out a long-shot on Saturday who deserves at least some passing interest and has each-way potential if he runs his best race. His biggest issue is that he’s never gone beyond three miles before and he’ll be being asked to go four-plus in the Grand National.
Three second-place finishes on the spin, however, isn’t to be sniffed at. He’s been runner-up in races at Newbury, Ascot and Aintree so far this jumps season.
In all of those performances, you can see there is a half-decent horse ready to break out but he doesn’t look a fluent jumper and in not one of those three outings have we seen anything extra coming to the line. That extra gear seems to be alluding him. That is probably why he’s such a big price on Saturday for the Grand National.
The handicapper has put him in a situation where he’ll be carrying over 11 stone and it just doesn’t look like a great position for him to be in. Clearly a game horse who will keep going, the last time he didn’t finish a race was 2022 and only once has he fallen, back in February 2021.
This is where the big price may pay off. With Betfred paying out seven places for online customers, he could just plod home for sixth or seventh, but it would need an awful lot to go right for that to happen.
