Hewick Grand National Odds 2025: American/Aintree Grand National Double?

Hewick will be one of the horses with the most column inches heading into Saturday’s big race. As a former £800 bargain-buy, his story will be told by many (including by me here…) but what you really want to know is whether he’s a legitimate contender or not.

Well I’ll get into that as we look at his recent form and those all-important Grand National Odds for Hewick here with Betfred…

I think a bit of background is a good place to start here. Yes, this is a horse who cost his owner just £800 and many will have seen the story about when his trainer walked him into a bar for a pint of Guinness. This is the type of horse that many casual fans will undoubtedly be rooting for and indeed back heavily with the bookies.

The thing is, he’s actually a legitimate contender. He may have inherited victory in the 2023 King George VI when Shishkin went down two fences from home, but to get the victory he had to be in position when the opportunity arose.

That victory is one of several on his resume that certainly make the old ears prick up. Victory at Sandown Park in their Gold Cup in 2023 was another fine run, and he was even shipped off over the pond in 2022 and came back with the American Grand National title around his neck.

His 2024 included a lot of close-but-no-cigar performances, but this nine-year-old did win last time out at Thurles. His connection chose to bypass the Cheltenham Festival to school him over Aintree fences and they seem confident that he’s taken to them well.

His price has been collapsing as punters lump on and I’m positive that he’ll be taking even more money closer to the race. We know that casual punters love a story and a reason to root for one of the runners in the Grand National, and this one ticks all the boxes.

An underdog story? Check. A very low purchase price? Check. A trainer who is a bit of a character and not one of the major stables? Check. Plenty of column inches? Check. To top it all off, he’s a darned good horse. If you’ve pulled out Hewick in your office pool, you should be pleased.
