Seven races from Haydock Park on Friday afternoon, Sept 29th; 14.00 – 17.25.

Testing ground is forecast, and there aren’t huge fields – but we’ve jocks of the calibre of Rossa Ryan and David Probert to enjoy, and it’s bound to be interesting.

14.35 – Dramatic Effect @ 3/1

Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton is extremely able and her runners invariably warrant close inspection. She saddles Dramatic Effect here and Charles Bishop rides. He’s partnered the 2-yr-old filly in her two starts thus far and she’s shown great promise at a proper Grade One track, Newbury, on both occasions.

She’s the daughter of noted sprinter Bated Breath, and has readily seen out Friday’s trip of 6f in those Newbury appearances. She’s one of the contest’s most experienced runners, and faces several who have yet to see a racecourse.

Good progression was shown between runs one and two, and third time could be a charm in the north-west on Friday. Great chance in my book.

15.10 – Fusterlandia @ 11/4

Amo Racing have rarely been far from the headlines for one reason or another this term, and they enter Fusterlandia here. Trained by Dominic Ffrench Davis, the juvenile colt is ridden by the red-hot Rossa Ryan, who’s banging in winners for fun right now.

The horse has been the very model of consistency, and there’s only really been one modest showing – when perhaps overfaced in the Windsor Castle at the Royal meeting.

Handled the soft at Newbury last time perfectly well and was only beaten just over 2l, over a first try at 7f. He drops back to 6f here and the fact that we know he gets a bit further can help enormously on what I’m thinking will be testing terrain. Let’s hope it’s another for the prolific Rossa.
