Grand National Grey Horses 2025: Could we finally get another grey winner?

The Grand National takes place at Aintree this Saturday (16:00, April 5) and with that in mind, we've taken a look at the beautiful grey horses running in this magnificent showpiece.
It's a bumper crop this year, with as many as seven in contention. Here are the Grand National Grey Horses 2025...

Everyone loves a grey, right? Well, in the 180+ years of Grand National history there have only been three grey winners of this most famous of races, so it's not exactly been good value to lump on the silver haired runners in the past. The Lamb was the first to win it in 1868 and then became only the third horse ever to win it twice just three years later.
We had to wait another 90 years before we would see another grey win the National, when the nine-year-old Nicolaus Silver crossed the line first and then there was another 51-year wait before Paul Nicholls famously trained Neptunes Collonges to a famous win in 2012.
Previous Grand National Grey Winners
| Year | Winner | Age | Weight | Jockey | Trainer | SP |
| 1868 | The Lamb | 6 | 10-07 | Mr George Ede | Ben Land | 9/1 |
| 1871 | The Lamb | 9 | 11-05 | Mr Thomas Pickernell | Chris Green | 11/2 |
| 1961 | Nicolaus Silver | 9 | 10-01 | Bobby Beasley | Fred Rimell | 28/1 |
| 2012 | Neptune Collonges | 11 | 11-06 | Daryl Jacobs | Paul Nicholls | 33/1 |
Intense Raffles @ 10/1
As mentioned above, there is an unusually large number of grey runners in the National field this year and perhaps none stands a better chance than Intense Raffles.
Last year's Irish National winner attempts to do the double and after a couple of 'ticking over' runs over hurdles, returned to the fences in the Bobbyjo Chase in February, where he finished runner-up to Nick Rockett.
This race is over a mile longer and whilst the added distance should suit, the ground may not.
Vanillier @ 11/1
This 10-year-old has had a superb career over both hurdles and fences and after a runners up finish two years ago, looks to go one better here for Gavin Cromwell. After that magnificent effort in 2023, he flattered to deceive last year when finishing fourteenth and needs a huge improvement to contend again.
However, he won at Punchestown in early February and then followed that up with a third-placed finish at the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham, where he was going well until he almost went off-course. Whether he would have had enough to trouble the eventual winner, Stumptown is a different matter altogether.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Hyland @ 16/1
Next up in contention for the £500,000 first-prize money is Hyland. Nicky Henderson has never won the National, so that would be a story in itself.
However, the eight-year-old looks to have a live chance after a thoroughly impressive start to his chasing career. In his six starts over fences, he has won three times and never finished lower than fourth.
This looks like another grey with a sniff of victory...
Kandoo Kid @ 20/1
This nine-year-old son of Scarlett Du Mesnil is probably Paul Nicholls' best chance from his five runners and what a story it would be to follow up the last grey winner in Neptunes Collonges, with another National winner for the Ditcheat yard.
After being impressive over these fences in the Topham last year and then winning the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury in November, his chances looked as good as any horse. However, a disappointing eight spot last time out has rather dampened expectations.
Duffle Coat @ 50/1
Duffle Coat was one of the last horses to be confirmed for the 34-runner field and this Gordon Elliott gelding might have more chance if he was actually wearing a duffle coat.
After winning at Ballinrobe last year, his recent form has looked patchy at best, with his last three outings reading Pulled Up, Last, Brought Down. Not the ideal prep for a race of this magnitude.
Coko Beach @ 66/1
Another Elliott runner next up in the form of Aintree veteran Coko Beach. This will be the 10-year-old's fifth outing in Liverpool and his fourth attempt at the 'Nash'.
His best attempt was back in 2022, when he finished eighth and after pulling up a year later, returned somewhat to form with an 11th placed finish last time out. Could be worth an each-way pick at these large odds.
Fil Dor @ 80/1
Our last silver runner is the third from Elliott but he looks the most unlikely of the three. The seven-year-old has won just twice from 14 runs over fences and has never competed in any big-field contests such as this one. Would be a huge shock.
