Conflated

If you are a punter who likes a small punt on a big long-shot in the Grand National then let me introduce you to the 11-year-old Conflated out of Gordon Elliott’s stable. He’ll go off at a big price after a pretty substandard season but has a Class I win on his resume.

We assess Conflated’s Odds for the Grand National but recent form suggest his chances are not that great…

If we turn the calendar back to this time last year, then Conflated looked like a horse that still had something very much going for him. A third-place finish in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival was followed up by finishing runner-up to Jonbon in the Melling Chase at the Aintree Grand National Festival after still very much being in the reckoning to win with 100 yards to go.

Since then though…not so good.

6-UR-5-8-7-10-8 is his record in those past seven races. His best finish of fifth was in a six-horse field. Now, to be fair to him, they have all been in quality races but finishing plumb last at the Irish Gold Cup doesn’t inspire confidence.

Even worse was what we saw at the Cheltenham Festival last month. On paper, finishing eighth of 20 in the Premier Handicap doesn’t seem as disappointing, but when you consider that race goes nearly two miles less than what he’ll be facing on Saturday, and he showed that there was very little left in the tank coming towards the line, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that there is a good performance in there waiting to break out.

Historically, Conflated has shown us that he’s clearly a classy horse. You don’t win the Irish Gold Cup (2022) or the Savills Chase (2022) without being the cream of the crop, but those days look firmly in the rearview mirror.

If you believe in sport that there is always one great performance left in a champion, then maybe Conflated is the horse for you on Saturday. Form, though, suggests otherwise.
