As mentioned in the introduction, Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin will not run in this year's Grand National, trainer Gavin Cromwell has told the Racing Post.
The impressive seven-year-old shocked Galopin Des Champs to win the Blue Riband at Cheltenham last Friday and was the antepost favourite for the 2025 Grand National. However, with just three weeks between races and the fact that he’s still a young horse, the decision has been made not to enter, stating, “We feel it’s the best thing to do by the horse."
This means a shake-up in the latest Grand National betting!
The Thomas Gibney-trained Intense Raffles is the market leader at Betfred, at odds of 6/1.
Winner of last season’s Irish Grand National, he’s set to run off a mark of 151, an 11lbs hike from that win, but campaigned very much with Aintree in mind, with a couple of spins over hurdles before finishing second in the Grade 3 Bobbyjo Chase in February, a standard National prep race for horses trained in Ireland.
While JP McManus won’t be running his Gold Cup winner here, he currently has two of the top three in the betting.
Iroko, trained by Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero, has been laid out for the race and has been prominent in the betting all season. He finished second at last year’s Grand National festival, behind Inothewayurthinkin in the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase. He runs off a mark just two pounds higher following his four races this season. He’s currently 8/1 second favourite.
Last year’s winner, I Am Maximus, looks like trainer Willie Mullins’ best chance at odds of 9/1.
He’ll have to defy top weight, eight pounds higher than when he won the race in 2024, by seven-and-a-half lengths from Delta Work. Lightly campaigned this season with just the two runs, it’s yet to be seen if Paul Townend will be in the saddle, but it would be a brave man to jump off a National winner.
There have been no significant market movers following Tuesday’s news, but Gavin Cromwell still has a number of entries in the race who are towards the top of the betting.
Stumptown (11/1) and Vanillier (14/1) ran in the Cross Country at Cheltenham, but Perceval Legallois catches the eye at 14/1.
Yet another horse owned by the prolific JP McManus, the eight-year-old has been pushed up the weights following a big win in the Listed handicap chase at the Christmas meeting in Leopardstown before an impressive spin over hurdles in his last prep run at the same track in February.
Paul Nicholls trains Kandoo Kid at 20/1. The winner at Newbury, in what was the Hennessy Gold Cup, is the pick of his form, whilst Nicky Henderson’s best-fancied runner in the race is Hyland at 25/1. The eight-year-old novice was a winner at Cheltenham twice in the Autumn.
