Goodwood racecourse

It's indeed been a Glorious Goodwood so far and the action continues on Thursday with an eight-race offering that begins at 13:50 and concludes after the 17:55.

I've got a handful of Glorious Goodwood Day 3 tips for your consideration - including a NAP in the feature race.

Glorious Goodwood Day 3 Tips

  • 14:25 - Tropical Storm @ 9/2
  • 15:35 - Opera Singer @ 2/1
  • 16:10 - Fearless Freddy @ 13/2

14:25 - Tropical Storm @ 9/2

Taken to get us off to a flyer at Goodwood on Thursday is TROPICAL STORM in the Richmond Stakes.

I respect The Strikin Viking who's Betfred's clear favourite for this Group 2 over six furlongs at time of publication, but he's short enough on his first start for new trainer Hamad Al Jehani.

The selection, meanwhile, is a much healthier price given he was also runner-up in a Group 2 - specifically the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot - last time out.

I think Andrew Balding's two-year-old, who's the highest-rated (104) runner in the nine-strong field, is absolutely crying out for this step up in trip, the quick ground is no problem and his top connections are in good form.

15:35 - Opera Singer @ 2/1

My best bet of the day is Aidan O'Brien's OPERA SINGER in the Nassau Stakes - a Group 1 for fillies and mares aged three and above.

The daughter of Justify was highly-progressive as a juvenile, going from an eight-place finish in a Curragh maiden to a five-length Group 1 success at Longchamp on Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe day.

An interrupted preparation meant she wasn't fully ready for her reappearance at three in the Irish 1000 Guineas, but she ran very well under the circumstances, finishing just over four lengths behind the winner in third.

Significant improvement followed when she was runner-up to subsequent Falmouth Stakes hero Porta Fortuna in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot - and for me everything points to a career-best effort on Thursday.

The step up in trip is a question mark, but O'Brien is on record saying this has always been the plan and that "she can probably go even further too". That's enough for me.

Emily Upjohn is respected, but I fancy giving eight pounds to the selection will prove too big of an ask.

16:10 - Fearless Freddy @ 13/2

Finally, I'm siding with FEARLESS FREDDY in this nursery handicap over seven furlongs.

William Muir & Chris Grassick's colt has had an unusual season. It started with a modest performance in a Windsor maiden over six furlongs before a much-improved effort over an extended five at Bath - but then connections opted to step him up to seven at Leicester in mid-June.

That looked an odd decision at the time, but it was the right one as he comfortably landed the spoils by nearly three lengths to a subsequent winner for Ralph Beckett.

It's tough to gauge exactly the level he's at, I must admit, but an opening mark of 78 doesn't look harsh at all and he's been given a handy draw in stall three.

As this is a  competitive affair and an Extra Place Race with five available instead of four, the suggestion is an each-way one.
