Glengouly Grand National Odds 2024: Lighty-race eight-year-old is a fringe each-way play

Willie Mullins certainly has plenty of chances to win his second Grand National but one of the longer shots from his stable is the eight-year-old Glengouly, who might have something about him.

Winning the Grand National as a longshot isn’t as rare as people might think as three horses this century have won this race at a starting price of 50/1 or longer. Just two years back Noble Yeats got it done at that price and Sue Smith surprised many when her horse Auroras Encore came home to win in 2013 at 66/1. Mon Mome is the third of the trio at 100/1 when he crossed the line first in 2009.

On the face of it, Glengouly comes into this one on the back of a poor run at Cheltenham, beaten by 49 lengths and coming home 16th in the Plate Handicap. The truth of it is that he was well and truly in it, leading briefly before weakening when he made a bad mistake two out, which saw the speed disappear and his jockey just bringing him home.

That result came on the back of a pair of runner-up finishes over in Ireland, chasing home Happy Dreams at Limerick and Grand National contender Ain’t That A Shame at Gowran Park. So can we say that his Cheltenham performance was a bit of an anomaly on the soft ground?

I’m not so sure but there was certainly a bit of momentum behind this horse before that performance at the Festival. It feels like a stretch to expect him to be anywhere near the pointy end here though, this is a class field and if you are looking for a big-priced contender, I’d probably be looking elsewhere.
