Galvin Grand National Odds 2024: Ground a concern for Elliott star

Gordon Elliott is the only trainer who has won the Aintree Grand National with more than one horse so far this century and he has several interesting options heading into the 2024 edition. The next one we explore is Galvin.

Last year Galvin unseated his rider at the first and the world quickly moved on but his trainer most certainly did not and he thinks that this 10-year-old may well be the best of his runners set to take to the start line at 16:00 on Saturday afternoon.

He’s been targeted for two races this campaign, and with the Cross Country at Cheltenham having been cancelled due to the conditions, that has left his team preparing him solely for the big race at Aintree this weekend. So what they are saying there is don’t worry about his disappointing results so far this season as we’ve not seen Galvin even finish in the top three in any of his three starts this term.

Galvin is running off a mark under 11st and Elliott likes him at that number and notes that this will be 3lb less than he was carrying a year ago. This horse has already shown immense potential down at the Cheltenham Festival, having won back in 2021 and finishing a respectable fourth in the Gold Cup in 2022 along with finishing two-and-a-half lengths behind stable-mate Delta Work in the 2023 running of the Cross Country.

There will be many people wondering whether Galvin or Delta Work is Gordon Elliott’s best chance of winning the race for a fourth time this century, but if you’ve pulled either in your office pool it could have been an awful lot worse.
