Despite being given a relatively high weight heading into the Aintree Grand National, Foxy Jacks is not considered among the favourites for the big one at Aintree, but that won’t faze his trainer Michael Morris one jot.

If you are looking to back Foxy Jacks to win the Grand National, either you’ve picked his name out of the proverbial hat in the office pool and are looking to back your choice, or you really believe in that performance in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase at Cheltenham towards the end of 2023. That day we saw this horse beat a whole host of higher-rated contenders on soft ground to win at a starting price of 9/1, with the likes of Lastnightpass, Delta Work and Galvin all very much outclassed by this Michael Morris-trained horse.

In some places you could have got 20/1 early in the day before some late action saw his price shorten as conditions made it clear that the favourites may not like the ground. Still, his performance should not be overlooked just because the grass was Good to Soft and with all the rain that the north-west has been experiencing over the past few months, it is not exactly going to be bone dry as the horses head on out to the track on Saturday afternoon.

If Foxy Jacks can repeat such a performance, where he never really looked in much danger, then there is certainly some merit to backing him each-way at a good price.

Last time out he finished fourth when the betting favourite at Leopardstown but that race wasn’t even at three miles, and we’ve seen that the longer the distance, the better this horse does. Stamina does not seem to be an issue. So if what we saw at Cheltenham last year is real, he’s an each-way play for some but if that was the outlier, then the big odds available are probably a good testament to his real chances.
