Betfred Derby 2024 Betting Tips

Britain's richest and most prestigious flat race - the Betfred Derby - takes place at Epsom on Saturday afternoon (16:30).

I've already produced a guide to the 16 Classic contenders and now it's time for a couple of Epsom Derby tips.

Epsom Derby Tips 2024

  • Los Angeles @ 4/1
  • Macduff e/w (4 places) @ 14/1

Before getting down to the nitty-gritty of my two selections, I have to briefly touch on the much-discussed City Of Troy.

Despite a disappointing display in the 2000 Guineas, Aidan O'Brien's son of Justify is, at time of publication, clinging onto favouritism ahead of the Betfred Derby.

I'm in two minds about last year's Champion Juvenile. He's the potential superstar in the field and his run at Newmarket was surely too bad to be true and as a result can't be regarded as concrete evidence that he hasn't trained on - but at the same time, that remains a possibility and his unfavourable draw in stall 1 casts further doubt on his chances.

He's drifted to an admittedly backable price over the last few days, mainly due to the support for stablemate LOS ANGELES.

The son of Camelot was unbeaten as a two-year-old, winning an ordinary maiden at Tipperary before Group 1 glory over in France, and he returned this term with a snug success in the G3 Derby Trial at Leopardstown in mid-May.

That form is below what's required on Saturday, but I'm hopeful there's a lot more to come from the selection with that reappearance under his belt on just his fourth ever run. Hopefully for the step up to 1m4f, which looks sure to suit, too.

In the absence of Ryan Moore, who has of course opted to ride City Of Troy, the experienced and capable Wayne Lordan is in the plate and whatever the weather decides to do over the next 24 hours or so will be of no inconvenience to his mount, who appears completely ground versatile.

Los Angeles to win the Betfred Derby at 4-1

My second and final selection for the Betfred Derby is MACDUFF each-way - with four places on offer.

The son of Sea The Stars has won just once in four runs, but to his credit he's been keeping some very good company.

His three defeats following his debut victory at Newmarket have been behind proven, Group 1 horses and he hasn't been beaten all that far.

For example, he was only two lengths behind the classy Ghostwriter (fourth in the 2000 Guineas) in the red-hot Royal Lodge Stakes at HQ last September and he was best of the rest behind Godolphin's Arabian Crown, who was previously towards the head of the Epsom Derby Odds before an unfortunate setback, in the G3 Classic Trial at Sandown in late April.

Connections were quoted this week saying they expect significant improvement as the stable wasn't really firing at that time - and I expect progression for the further step up in trip, so I think he's capable of finding that bit extra required to be competitive in a race of this calibre.

Macduff each-way for the Betfred Derby at 14-1
