Doncaster races scaled

There are seven British and Irish meetings taking place on Thursday, and the afternoon Flat card at Doncaster features amongst them. It's a seven-race offering at Town Moor, where they race from 14:00-17:20, and the ground is expected to be good, good to firm in places.

The Class 2 Darley EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes at 15:40 is the feature race and we've picked out three horses to follow for our Doncaster tips, including Tourist after a recent confidence-boosting success over course and distance.

Doncaster Tips - July 25

  • 15:05 – Tourist @ 11/4
  • 15:40 – Faifa @ 14/1
  • 17:20 – Fletcher's Flight @ 11/4

15:05 – Tourist @ 11/4

The hat-trick seeking Daring Legend is respected for trainer Mick Appleby but with his claiming rider absent here and a 6lb penalty to carry, he's effectively 13lb higher than when scoring at Yarmouth eight days ago and, therefore, is taken on with TOURIST.

The Hilal Kobeissi-trained gelding scored on soft ground over course and distance earlier in the month. He built on the promise shown at Haydock and Redcar earlier in the season as he was given a positive ride and came home with more than three lengths to spare under Richard Kingscote.

The runner-up held up the form at Ripon next time, and Tourist appears to have scope to build on that commanding win now returned to a handicap from a mark of 77. Faster ground should be no concern – he has run well on good before – and Clifford Lee knows the horse well from those aforementioned runs at Redcar and Haydock.

This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred will be paying 3 places instead of 2 at 1/5 Odds.

15:40 – Faifa @ 14/1

The feature Darley EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes looks a gilt-edged opening for 96-rated Miss Cynthia on paper, but Sir Mark Prescott's filly is a 14-race maiden and may be flattered by her current mark, which was achieved after runs in Group 3 and Listed company at Sandown over 2m in recent months.

It could be telling that a pair of first-time blinkers are fitted for this drop in class.

Instead, a chance is afforded to the unexposed FAIFA for John and Thady Gosden. The Galileo filly has just two runs behind her and while well held in novice/maiden company at Salisbury and Haydock over 1m2f, she's open to progress and this rise in trip promises to suit.

James Doyle takes over in the saddle for an in-form Gosden yard, with the Clarehaven operation boasting a 24 per-cent strike-rate at Doncaster over the last five seasons. With eight runners and three places to play for, it's worth siding with this filly to improve.

17:20 – Fletcher's Flight @ 11/4

FLETCHER'S FLIGHT was sent off favourite at Yarmouth (6f, good) recently despite being 2lb out of the handicap and Philip McBride's lightly-raced Profitable gelding duly delivered under Adam Farragher.

That was his second win from just five turf starts and it came on his second run after undergoing a wind operation.

He has a penalty to carry for that score eight days ago but, this time, he appears to be on the right side of the handicapper. There could well be more improvement to come from this four-year-old and he can taste success in the Doncaster finale.
