Doncaster stage a seven-race flat card on Friday, Oct 27th – between 13.45 – 17.11.
Respectable field sizes, and lots of top connections are represented. Should be a cracking afternoon’s sport.
14.55 – Beeley @ 5/4
One of racing’s great truths over the years has been the necessity to strongly consider trainer John Gosden’s maidens at the back-end of the season. We’re about to do just that.
Beeley is a 2-yr-old daughter of Camelot, and has had just the one racecourse experience thus far – a fine effort over a smidge further than this at Nottingham, beaten by inches.
That I’m sure could well have been that for her season if she’d prevailed, but connections try again around 3 weeks later to break the maiden tag. For me she makes no mistake on Town Moor, in what’s expected to be testing ground, just as it was in the Midlands on debut.
She achieved an excellent Racing Post rating too, and for me rates absolute ‘nap’ material.
16.37 – Zozimus @ 4/1
One mile Class 3 handicap, for 3-yr-olds and upwards.
Zozimus is a 5-yr-old gelding that began life in the care of Donnacha O’Brien before joining David O’Meara at the start of 2023. A couple of weeks ago at York he contested a Class 2 in soft ground and ran exceptionally well, going down by just one-and-a-half lengths.
He’s almost been too consistent for his own good because game performances have seen his handicap mark decrease only slowly, but he raced off 86 on the Knavesmire and is on the same mark on Friday.
Nice flat, fair track at Donny, similar to York, and I’m hoping Danny Tudhope can time things to a nicety and arrive late to take the spoils. Runs in the colours of the Horse Watchers, a very successful outfit that knows how to win races.
