Betfred st leger festival day 3 tips with owen mcmahon

The main event on Saturday is of course the Betfred St Leger itself, but there's plenty of quality events either side of the Classic contest too.

Read on for my Doncaster St Leger Festival Day 3 tips.

Doncaster St Leger Festival Day 3 Tips

  • 13:50 - Wolf Of Badenoch @ 10/3
  • 14:25 - Born To Rock e/w @ 20/1
  • 15:40 - Jan Brueghel @ 4/1 & Deira Mile e/w @ 14/1

13:50 - Wolf Of Badenoch @ 10/3

Saturday's opener is the Betfred Champagne Stakes - a Group 2 over seven furlongs for two-year-old colts and geldings - which has attracted a small but select field of six.

My overwhelming feeling is that Chancellor, who's a relatively warm favourite at time of publication, is underpriced. He's run three times already, more than all but one of his rivals, showing a similar level of form each time.

Official ratings are ultimately just one man's opinion, but John & Thady Gosden's runner has a mark of 99 which is seven pounds inferior to WOLF OF BADENOCH.

Hugo Palmer's son of Pinatubo triumphed over course and distance on his debut in June, before a fantastic second to Charlie Appleby's now 111-rated Aomori City in the G2 Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood the following month.

That form has depth to it, with subsequent Group 2 hero Cool Hoof Luke, who was fourth in the Coventry at Royal Ascot prior, over a length behind the selection in third.

He should be at least vying for favouritism as far as I'm concerned, so he rates a great bet at the quoted price.

13:50 Doncaster - To Win Wolf Of Badenoch

Odds correct at time of publishing.

14:25 - Born To Rock e/w @ 20/1

Next up is the Betfred Portland, a 22-runner handicap over 5½f.

Last-time-out winners Shagraan and Jm Jungle ought to go well again, but I suggest a small each-way play on George Scott's BORN TO ROCK.

The three-year-old filly joined Scott's yard from Jane Chapple-Hyam last month following a couple of disappointing efforts, and clearly the change of scenery did her the world of good as she was an excellent runner-up here at Donny just days later.

That was off a mark of 92 and she's been raised two pounds as a result, which looks very fair given how much improvement could follow. This will be only her seventh start and I think she was given too much to do the last day - also the slightly longer trip looks ideal.

It's a very competitive contest, but she can outrun her odds at the very least.

This is an Extra Place Race, with five available instead of four at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets. Betfred are also offering your stake back (up to £10) as a free bet if your selection finishes 2nd.

14:25 Doncaster - Each-Way Born To Rock

Odds correct at time of publishing.

15:40 - Jan Brueghel @ 4/1 & Deira Mile e/w @ 14/1

Just over half-an-hour later is the big one - the Betfred St Leger. The oldest and longest of Britain's five Classics. Seven go to post for the 1m6f contest and I've picked out a couple.
