Delta Work Grand National Odds 2024: Strong stayer can’t be ignored

Here we have one of the small handful of horses looking to take to the track for the third time in the Aintree Grand National, as 2022 third-place finisher Delta Work is the next to be featured in our series looking at all the entries for the big race on Saturday.

Delta Work may have finished third here in 2022 and unseated his rider last year but most people remember him as the horse who beat the great Tiger Roll in his final-ever run at the Cheltenham Cross Country back in 2022 at the Festival. It was one of the most heart-warming moments in recent years as the two horses strode together towards the Winner’s Enclosure with the crowd celebrating both the winner and the extraordinary career of his stablemate.

This Gordon Elliott horse went back to Gloucestershire in 2023 and backed up that emotional win by winning the race again, this time it was another of the horses he shares a stable with, Galvin, who was beaten to the line and it became evident that Delta Work was no one-hit wonder and had plenty about him, and the Cross Country/Grand National career double was not beyond the realm of possibility.

This current campaign, though, has been nothing short of disappointing and the much-anticipated repeat of that duel at the Cheltenham Festival was of course postponed due to the conditions. Delta Work has finished an average of 16 lengths behind the winner in each of his three races after that 179-day break following last year's Grand National.

No doubt his trainer has been gearing him up to be in the best form right now but there are question marks. The quality is there, the stamina is there, the fence-jumping ability is there, but where is the form? We’ll find out on Saturday afternoon but he’s another who should be considered in the each-way market and might be one of the biggest prices for a fringe win contender.
