Newmarket racecourse

Flat racing holds sway across the UK and Ireland on Friday with five meetings taking place across the afternoon and into the evening.

First off is Newmarket before jumps at Worcester and a combination of both codes at Listowel. Then flat action at Haydock before moving into the evening for all-weather action at Dundalk and Newcastle. Amongst our Friday fancies is one for trainer Owen Burrows, who has a very exciting filly stepping up to grouped company for the first time.

14:15 Haydock - Charencey @ 6/1

The first race at Haydock this afternoon is one for the apprentice jockeys, and while he may have a bit to find on ratings, the selection goes to Ian Williams’ CHARENCEY.  In his last two runs, he has been extremely unlucky but still managed to put in an eye-catching finish, which suggests a win may be on the cards for him soon.

His latest run at Leicester saw a horse cut across his path when he was making ground and ultimately ruined any chance he had in that race. He arrives here today on an unchanged mark and 15lb lower than his previous winning mark. He seems to be versatile on any ground, and if he is able to get a clear run, he will have the best possible chance of success.

14:25 Newmarket - Touleen @ 11/8

The Rockfel Stakes on day two is the first piece of Group 2 action at the Cambridgeshire meeting, and while this looks to be a competitive affair, there is one filly that stands out from the rest. Shadwell’s TOULEEN looks to be the one to beat in today’s renewal.

Owen Burrow’s two-year-old is lightly raced but remains unbeaten and saw off fellow race rival and odds-on favourite that day, Zanthos, in emphatic fashion last time out at Leicester. After both had their issues at the start, Touleen was the one to kick on in impressive style and win by 3 1/4 lengths.

Friday will be the toughest test Owen Burrow’s charge has faced to date, with the step up to grouped company for the first time. However, she seems very progressive and will enjoy the additional benefit of top course jockey William Buick in the saddle and renewing the partnership today.

14:50 Haydock - Night Mission @ 7/4

Mark Rimell’s NIGHT MISSION put in a very eye-catching performance over course and distance last time out on his debut. An awkward start saw him detached at the back of the field and he still managed to work his way through and finish second by 2 ¼ lengths to the runner in third.

It was unfortunate that day he happened to bump into a smart Wathnan runner in Division who has since franked that form with a win in his next run. However, today could be an easier test for the two-year-old and is worth a shot at Haydock this afternoon.
