Coventry Stakes Tips: Little risk with Underwriter

The Coventry Stakes provides the Group 2 action at Royal Ascot on Tuesday and it could be one of the most entertaining races of the meeting.

A field of 21-runners are set to go to post for this six-furlong race, which is exclusively for two-year-olds, and my selections focus on two each-way plays.

The Coventry Stakes could be one of the blockbuster races at this year’s Royal meeting with a field of 21 two-year-olds, all packed with potential, set to battle it out.

Clearly, a case can be made for plenty of the runners and there is likely to be big improvements from many of the lightly-raced youngsters.

However, at 11/1 there looks to be little risk on an each-way bet on Underwriter.

Archie Watson’s runner was a £200,000 breeze-up buy and good things were clearly expected,  with the two-year-old sent off at 11/10 on his debut at Ayr.

Underwriter made no mistake in Scotland and scored with authority. That form doesn’t amount to much, but there is plenty of room for progress.

The same trainer, owner and rider gained a debut win with similarly expensive breeze-up purchase Electrolyteat at Ayr last year and he went on to run an excellent race to finish second in the Coventry in 2024.

Watson won the Coventry with a once-raced horse three years ago and the imposing Underwriter should give a good account in this season’s renewal.

Paul and Oliver Cole’s charge, American Gulf, made a striking debut at Windsor, winning by three-and-a-quarter lengths. Again, the bare form isn’t fantastic, but potential is the key in the Coventry and the way American Gulf stayed on to draw clear of his rivals caught the eye.

The yard won three renewals of the Coventry in the 1990s and they have unleashed some impressive juveniles this season.

American Gulf is the Coventry pick and there should be more to come from this £150,000 son of Ardad.

It’s early days, but fast ground on a flat track looks ideal for American Gulf and Coventry conditions should be perfect for the two-year-old to deliver a strong showing.
