If at first you don’t succeed, then try, try, try again is the old adage. When it comes to Coko Beach, though, that saying needs an extra 'try' as he’s set to line up for his fourth tilt at the Grand National at Aintree this Saturday. The 10-year-old has been an ever present in the race since 2022, and while he’s yet to place, there is some belief that he could be one of those big-priced horses that earns money for an each-way bet.
While he was pulled up in 2023, this horse finished in both 2022 and 2024 in 8th and 11th respectively. That is a testament to his jumping ability. If you look at his record, he hasn’t fallen since December 2019. That is a long time ago and indicates that his chances of getting around the Grand National course are pretty darned good indeed.
The biggest question mark is whether he has the speed to contend towards the front of the field in a position which pays out. His season so far has been pretty mixed at best but he was second to heavily-fancied Grand National contender Vanillier in the P.P. Hogan Memorial Cross Country Chase at Punchestown earlier this year - albeit 18 lengths behind the eventual winner that day.
Last time out, though, was a bit less encouraging as only French Dynamite of the 10 finishers ended up behind him in the Cross Country at Cheltenham. That trip certainly gives cause for concern and is probably why he’s closer to 100/1 than the 33s that he went off at a year ago.
Unlikely to be in the mix at the pointy end but I fully expect him to make his way round, and if he finishes then that at least gives him a chance to pay out each-way.
