Chepstow races scaled

Seven National Hunt races take place at Chepstow on Friday afternoon between 12.30 - 15.55.

Field sizes are on the small side but some big yards are represented, and an interesting card is sure to provide compelling racing.

Chepstow is a proper test for any horse - with a long, stamina-sapping straight to negotiate. And talking of staying power - it's likely to be very testing, ground-wise.

Chepstow tips, Friday

  • 14.15 - Midnight Ginger @ 13/2
  • 15.55 - Below The Radar @ 5/2

14.15 - Midnight Ginger @ 13/2

A Class 4 handicap hurdle over just short of 2 1/2 miles.

Midnight Ginger is a 7-yr-old mare in the care of trainer Andrew J Martin, and will be ridden by claimer James Martin. We've not seen her since Market Rasen in the summer, but she has gone pretty well fresh in the past.

That last spin was at a level above this, and she started favourite for it. She's a course-and-distance scorer too - always a bonus. This is a very modest little contest and I'm hoping 7lb claimer James can work the oracle.

15.55 - Below The Radar @ 5/2

A 'bumper' to close proceedings - a National Hunt flat race.

The selection  carries the legendary colours of the Hemmings family (Hemmings Racing), conjuring up memories of racing's great supporter, the late Trevor, and horses of the calibre of Hedgehunter and Many Clouds.

Below The Radar is with the many-times champ Paul Nicholls and will be ridden by Lorcan Williams. The 5-yr-old gelding has been narrowly beaten in both his Points before joining Nicholls at the start of the month.

There's bags of guesswork involved as to how talented he'll end up being of course; but with impeccable connections and that considerable pointing promise shown there's plenty of reason for optimism.
