Chemical Energy Grand National Odds 2024: Talented but inconsistent

Chemical Energy heads into Saturday’s big one as one of the most lightly-raced horses in the field. This eight-year-old hasn’t been seen on track since his season debut back in September at Listowel, when he was beaten by 10 lengths in the Kerry National.

For those looking for a good reason to back this reasonably-priced shot, then let me take you back to the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, when we saw him go stride-for-stride with the very classy Gaillard Du Mensil in the National Hunt Challenge Cup Amateur Jockeys' Novices' Chase, before not having that final extra gear to edge him out in the final 100 yards or so. That was a very good run, however, and backed up the form of a couple of nice autumn victories back in 2022.

We would see him once again last season when he was pulled-up in the Irish Grand National. He certainly wasn’t at his best that day and made two mistakes when jumping before weakening. That is probably the biggest blot on his copy book, as he went into that one as a very intriguing 16/1 shot.

Backing a horse who hasn’t been seen much is a tough ask but Chemical Energy profiles very nicely. He’s proven that he has above-average levels of stamina and his two poorest runs recently have been on soft ground. There seems little doubt that he’ll want a few days of sunshine up in the north-west to firm up the track but that seems optimistic.

He enters the race fresh and having shown some real class in a good field in very recent times. Will certainly attract money and interest.
